Genital scabies?
Hello, doctor.
I have scabies, and it has also infected my genital area.
I have been applying the medication as instructed by my doctor, but I notice that there is a strange, sticky, wet discharge from my glans.
I'm not sure if this is a good or bad sign.
My underwear has been damp lately, which is quite bothersome, and it tends to stick.
Thank you for your help!

Genital scabies, caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, is a common skin infestation that can lead to significant discomfort and distress. The symptoms of scabies typically include intense itching, especially at night, and the presence of a rash or small red bumps on the skin. When the genital area is involved, patients may experience additional symptoms such as irritation, inflammation, and unusual discharge, which can be concerning.
In your case, the presence of a "strange, sticky, moist discharge" from the glans (tip) of the penis could be attributed to several factors. First, it is essential to understand that scabies can cause secondary infections due to scratching and skin damage. This can lead to bacterial infections, which may present as discharge. Additionally, the irritation caused by scabies and the topical treatments used may also contribute to changes in the discharge.
It is crucial to differentiate between normal bodily secretions and those that may indicate an infection. Normal penile discharge can vary in consistency and color, but if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as increased redness, swelling, or pain, it may suggest a bacterial infection or another underlying condition that requires medical attention.
Regarding treatment, it is essential to follow your physician's instructions carefully. Common treatments for scabies include topical permethrin cream or oral ivermectin, which are effective in eliminating the mites. However, it is also important to treat any secondary infections that may arise. If the discharge persists or worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever or increased pain, it is advisable to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In addition to medication, maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Wash all clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water to eliminate any remaining mites and prevent reinfestation. Avoid close contact with others until the infestation is fully treated to prevent spreading scabies.
If you find that the discharge is particularly bothersome or concerning, consider discussing it with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional treatments, such as antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected, or further diagnostic tests to rule out other conditions.
In summary, while genital scabies can lead to discomfort and unusual symptoms, proper treatment and hygiene practices can effectively manage the condition. If you have ongoing concerns about your symptoms or treatment, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice. Your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing any complications early can lead to better outcomes.
