The ejaculated sperm can have two different colors?

Recently, the last two times I ejaculated, the color of the semen appeared unusual.
In addition to the normal color of semen (white to yellow), there were also some dark red and deep brownish substances that did not look like blood streaks.
What could be the cause of this? How should I address it?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/10/31

Dr. Lin Hexing reply Urology

Hello: The presence of dark red semen should raise concerns about hematospermia.
In younger individuals, the most common cause of hematospermia is an infection of the reproductive tract.
It is recommended that you visit a urology clinic for a semen analysis and further evaluation.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to the color of semen, variations can occur due to a variety of factors, and understanding these changes is crucial for assessing reproductive health. Semen typically appears white to pale yellow, but it can take on different hues, including shades of yellow, green, or even red and brown. The presence of unusual colors, particularly dark red or brown, can be concerning and may indicate underlying health issues.

In your case, the observation of dark red or deep brownish colors in your semen could potentially be linked to a condition known as hematospermia, which is the presence of blood in the semen. This can result from several factors, including infections, inflammation, or trauma to the reproductive organs. In younger individuals, infections of the reproductive tract are often the most common cause. Other potential causes may include:
1. Infections: Conditions such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland) or epididymitis (inflammation of the epididymis) can lead to blood in the semen. These infections may also present with other symptoms like pain during urination, discomfort in the pelvic area, or fever.

2. Trauma: Any injury to the genital area, whether from vigorous sexual activity or an accident, can result in bleeding that may manifest as discoloration in the semen.

3. Vascular Issues: Conditions such as varicocele (enlargement of veins within the scrotum) can lead to changes in semen color due to altered blood flow and pressure.

4. Prostate Issues: Conditions affecting the prostate, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate cancer, can also lead to hematospermia.

5. Medical Procedures: Recent medical interventions, such as biopsies or surgeries involving the reproductive organs, may result in temporary changes in semen color.

Given your symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider, preferably a urologist, for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend a semen analysis and other diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause of the discoloration. It is crucial not to ignore these symptoms, especially if they persist or are accompanied by other signs such as pain, swelling, or changes in urination.

In terms of management, treatment will depend on the underlying cause identified. If an infection is diagnosed, antibiotics may be prescribed. If the issue is related to vascular problems or trauma, your doctor will discuss appropriate management strategies.

Additionally, it is important to maintain good hygiene and practice safe sexual behaviors to minimize the risk of infections. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider about any changes in your reproductive health are vital for early detection and treatment of potential issues.

In conclusion, while variations in semen color can be normal, the presence of dark red or brown hues warrants further investigation. Seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure your reproductive health is safeguarded.
