After undergoing an abortion procedure?

Doctor, I had an abortion on January 27, and I started bleeding again on February 20.
The bleeding stopped on the night of February 22, but then started again on the morning of February 23.
My menstrual cycle is 28 days.
Is this my period? I went to the hospital for a check-up on February 21, and the doctor said that both my uterus and ovaries are fine, and there are follicles ready for ovulation.
Am I at risk of infertility in the future?

zero zero, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/02/23

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, after a miscarriage procedure, menstruation typically returns in about one to one and a half months.
If your current bleeding seems to be early for your period, it could also be related to ovarian activity, as there may be follicles preparing for ovulation.
It is advisable to monitor the situation for now.
Generally, the chances of infertility resulting from a miscarriage procedure are low; however, it is best to avoid undergoing such procedures whenever possible.
Therefore, I recommend implementing contraceptive measures.
Wishing you good health.

Post-abortion bleeding and fertility concerns are common topics of discussion among women who have undergone abortion procedures. It’s understandable to have worries about how an abortion might affect future fertility, especially after experiencing unexpected bleeding shortly after the procedure.
Firstly, it’s important to clarify that post-abortion bleeding can vary significantly from woman to woman. After an abortion, it is normal to experience some bleeding or spotting for a few weeks. This bleeding is often referred to as "lochia," which is the vaginal discharge that occurs after childbirth or abortion. It typically starts as bright red blood and may change to a lighter color as the body heals.
In your case, you mentioned that you had an abortion on January 27 and started bleeding again on February 20, with intermittent bleeding thereafter. Since you have a regular menstrual cycle of 28 days, it is possible that the bleeding you are experiencing could be your menstrual period, especially if it aligns with your cycle. However, it’s also possible that this bleeding is part of the post-abortion recovery process.
The fact that your doctor has examined your uterus and ovaries and found no issues is reassuring. It indicates that your body is healing properly and that there are no immediate complications from the abortion. The presence of follicles in your ovaries suggests that your body is preparing for ovulation, which is a positive sign of your reproductive health.
Regarding your concerns about future fertility, research indicates that a single abortion does not significantly impact a woman's ability to conceive in the future. Most women who have had an abortion go on to have healthy pregnancies later. However, it is crucial to ensure that the abortion was performed safely and that there were no complications, such as infection or retained tissue, which could affect future fertility.
If you continue to experience irregular bleeding or have concerns about your menstrual cycle, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as an ultrasound or hormonal testing, to ensure that everything is functioning as it should.
In summary, while it is natural to have concerns about your fertility after an abortion, the evidence suggests that most women do not experience long-term fertility issues. Your recent examination showing normal ovarian function is a positive indicator. If you have ongoing concerns or experience any unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance. Remember, open communication with your doctor is key to addressing any worries you may have about your reproductive health.
