Changes in bowel habits
Hello doctor, I have recently been experiencing bowel movements that are often pellet-like.
I didn't expect that in the past few days I would also have diarrhea.
I used to have diarrhea once or twice every few weeks, and sometimes I feel a slight stinging sensation in the anus during diarrhea.
I'm worried that this could possibly be colon cancer.

Hello: Based on the symptoms, it appears to be a functional gastrointestinal disorder.
You should first seek an initial evaluation from a gastroenterologist, and if necessary, further examinations can be conducted.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Understanding changes in bowel habits is crucial for assessing gastrointestinal health and identifying potential underlying conditions. Bowel habits can vary significantly among individuals, and changes in frequency, consistency, and appearance of stool can be indicative of various health issues.
In your case, experiencing changes such as pellet-like stools (often referred to as "sheep stools") followed by episodes of diarrhea, along with occasional abdominal pain, raises valid concerns. However, it’s important to note that these symptoms do not automatically indicate the presence of colorectal cancer.
Bowel Habit Changes: What They Might Indicate
1. Normal Variability: It's essential to recognize that bowel habits can fluctuate due to various factors, including diet, hydration, stress levels, and physical activity. For instance, a diet low in fiber can lead to harder, pellet-like stools, while increased fiber intake can result in softer, more regular bowel movements.
2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Your symptoms could be consistent with IBS, a common functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by a combination of abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, including diarrhea and constipation. Stress and anxiety, which you mentioned experiencing, are known triggers for IBS symptoms.
3. Dietary Factors: Changes in your diet, such as increased consumption of certain foods or decreased fiber intake, can significantly impact stool consistency. If you’ve recently altered your eating habits, this could explain the changes in your bowel movements.
4. Infections or Inflammation: Episodes of diarrhea can also be caused by infections (viral, bacterial, or parasitic) or inflammatory conditions such as colitis. If diarrhea persists or is accompanied by other symptoms like fever or significant abdominal pain, it’s advisable to seek medical attention.
5. Colorectal Cancer: While changes in bowel habits can be a symptom of colorectal cancer, it is typically accompanied by other signs, such as blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or persistent abdominal discomfort. The likelihood of colorectal cancer increases with age and certain risk factors, including family history, but it is less common in younger individuals without significant risk factors.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given your concerns, it is prudent to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend:
- Stool Tests: To rule out infections or other gastrointestinal issues.
- Colonoscopy: If there are concerning symptoms or if you have risk factors for colorectal cancer, a colonoscopy may be warranted to visualize the colon and check for abnormalities.
- Dietary Assessment: A review of your diet can help identify potential triggers for your symptoms.
Conclusion
In summary, while changes in bowel habits can be concerning, they are not always indicative of serious conditions like colorectal cancer. Factors such as diet, stress, and gastrointestinal disorders like IBS can play significant roles in these changes. It is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and appropriate diagnostic testing. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind regarding your gastrointestinal health.
