Genital Issues 1

Hello, doctor.
I accidentally used body wash to clean my genitals over the past two days, and a few days later, I noticed that my genitals are itchy.
There are even broken skin lesions on the foreskin.
Initially, I didn't think much of it, but after applying the neomycin ointment given by my mother, I found a small red spot on the glans the next day while showering.
The broken skin lesions also have some unknown white discharge.
What is happening to me?

Mr. K, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/08/13

Dr. Ding Yuantian reply Urology

Hello, sir.
Are there any other areas of your body that might be allergic to this body wash? I suggest you refrain from using this body wash for now, as it could likely be caused by an allergy or irritation.
I recommend that you visit a nearby dermatology or urology clinic for further evaluation.

Genital irritation can be a distressing condition, and it is important to understand its potential causes and appropriate treatments. Based on your description, it seems that you may be experiencing a reaction to the body wash you used, which could have led to irritation, inflammation, or even an infection in the genital area.

Possible Causes of Genital Irritation:
1. Chemical Irritation: Many body washes and soaps contain fragrances, dyes, and other chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin, particularly in the genital area. This irritation can manifest as itching, redness, and even broken skin.

2. Infections: The presence of a small red patch and white discharge could indicate a yeast infection or a bacterial infection. Yeast infections are common and can cause itching, redness, and a thick white discharge. Bacterial infections can also lead to similar symptoms and may require antibiotic treatment.

3. Allergic Reaction: If you have sensitive skin or are allergic to certain ingredients in the body wash, this could lead to contact dermatitis, which is characterized by redness, itching, and sometimes blistering or peeling of the skin.

4. Friction or Trauma: If there has been any friction or trauma to the area (for example, from tight clothing or vigorous washing), this could also lead to irritation and broken skin.

Recommended Treatments:
1. Discontinue Use of Irritating Products: Stop using the body wash that caused the irritation. Opt for gentle, fragrance-free cleansers specifically formulated for sensitive skin or for use in the genital area.

2. Keep the Area Clean and Dry: Gently wash the area with lukewarm water and a mild soap. Avoid scrubbing the area, as this can exacerbate irritation. Pat the area dry with a clean towel.

3. Topical Treatments: Since you mentioned using a new antibiotic ointment, it’s important to note that while it may help with bacterial infections, it may not be effective for yeast infections or allergic reactions. If the irritation persists, consider using over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to reduce inflammation and itching, but only for a short duration.

4. Avoid Irritants: Wear loose-fitting, breathable underwear made of cotton to reduce moisture and friction. Avoid tight clothing that may exacerbate irritation.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the symptoms you described, especially the presence of broken skin and discharge, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination, possibly take a swab of the affected area, and determine whether you have an infection that requires specific treatment.

6. Follow-Up Care: If you notice any worsening of symptoms, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge, or if you develop fever or systemic symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

Conclusion:
Genital irritation can arise from various causes, including chemical irritation, infections, and allergic reactions. It is crucial to identify the underlying cause to determine the appropriate treatment. Discontinuing the use of irritating products, maintaining proper hygiene, and consulting a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation will help in managing your symptoms effectively. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to health concerns, especially in sensitive areas.
