How to maintain health?

Hello Doctor, due to the high stress from studying and being classified as obese, I have experienced uncontrolled blood pressure that led to retinal hemorrhage.
As a result, I started taking antihypertensive medication, and I have been gradually losing weight, with the dosage reduced to half.
Currently, I am still slightly overweight, so the doctor cannot definitively determine whether there is a genetic factor or if the hypertension is solely due to obesity.
Initially, I was prescribed a beta-blocker, but I switched to a calcium channel blocker due to concerns about long-term effects on sexual function.
I would like to ask the doctor: 1.
If it is genetic, will I be more prone to sexual function issues in the future, particularly after the age of 30 or 40? 2.
Given that I am so young and already have blood pressure issues, what can I do to maintain my health and prevent sexual function decline? *I currently have no sexual experience and I jog 3 to 4 times a week for 30 to 40 minutes each time! Thank you for your response, Doctor!

Managing hypertension is crucial not only for overall health but also for maintaining sexual health. Your concerns about the potential impact of high blood pressure and the medications used to manage it on sexual function are valid and deserve careful consideration.

Understanding Hypertension and Its Causes
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, can arise from various factors, including genetics, lifestyle choices, and body weight. In your case, it seems that stress and obesity have played significant roles in your condition. The fact that you are actively working on weight management through exercise is commendable, as maintaining a healthy weight can significantly reduce blood pressure and improve overall cardiovascular health.

Impact of Hypertension on Sexual Health
1. Potential Sexual Dysfunction: High blood pressure can lead to sexual dysfunction in both men and women. In men, it can cause erectile dysfunction (ED) due to reduced blood flow to the penis, which is essential for achieving and maintaining an erection. In women, hypertension can affect arousal and lubrication. The medications used to treat hypertension, particularly beta-blockers, have also been associated with sexual side effects, including decreased libido and erectile issues. However, switching to a calcium channel blocker, as you have done, may help mitigate these risks.

2. Genetic Factors: If hypertension has a genetic component in your family, it may increase the likelihood of experiencing sexual health issues as you age. However, this does not mean that you are destined to face these problems. Lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and a balanced diet, can significantly reduce the risk of developing sexual dysfunction.

Preventive Measures for Sexual Health
1. Regular Exercise: You are already on the right track by running 3 to 4 times a week. Regular aerobic exercise not only helps in weight management but also improves circulation, which is vital for sexual health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, which can include brisk walking, cycling, or swimming.

2. Healthy Diet: Focus on a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is specifically designed to help manage blood pressure and can also support sexual health.

3. Stress Management: Since stress has contributed to your hypertension, finding effective ways to manage stress is essential. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, or even engaging in hobbies can help reduce stress levels.

4. Regular Check-ups: Keep up with regular medical check-ups to monitor your blood pressure and overall health. This will help your healthcare provider make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan and address any emerging concerns about sexual health.

5. Open Communication: If you enter into a sexual relationship, open communication with your partner about any concerns regarding sexual health is vital. This can help alleviate anxiety and foster a supportive environment.

Conclusion
In summary, while hypertension can impact sexual health, proactive management through lifestyle changes and regular medical care can significantly mitigate these risks. Your commitment to exercise and weight management is a positive step toward maintaining both your cardiovascular and sexual health. If you have ongoing concerns about sexual function or the effects of your medication, consider discussing these with your healthcare provider, who can offer tailored advice and potential alternatives. Remember, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to preventing future complications and ensuring a fulfilling sexual life.
