Constipation
Hello Dr.
Chen: For the past two months, I have frequently experienced soft and unformed stools, with very few instances of passing stool in a formed, cylindrical shape.
I can't help but feel that the formed stools I do pass seem to be thinner, although they generally remain around 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter.
The color varies, sometimes yellow, sometimes brown, and occasionally green.
Previously, I would feel the urge to have a bowel movement shortly after breakfast, but recently this has become irregular (once every 1 to 2 days).
I came across some symptoms of colorectal cancer online, which include changes in bowel habits and stool consistency.
I'm wondering if my situation falls into this category, or if I'm just worrying unnecessarily.
I would appreciate your response.
Thank you!

Hello: Based on the symptoms, the most likely diagnosis is enteritis.
It is recommended to consult a gastroenterologist, and you may need to undergo stool tests and possibly further invasive procedures such as a colonoscopy if necessary.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Chi-Feng Chen, Gastroenterology Department, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Irregular bowel movements can be concerning, especially when accompanied by changes in stool consistency, frequency, and color. Based on your description, it seems you have been experiencing soft, unformed stools that occasionally appear thinner than usual. Additionally, the variability in color—from yellow to brown to green—along with changes in your bowel habits, can understandably lead to anxiety about potential underlying health issues, including colorectal cancer.
Firstly, it's important to recognize that changes in bowel habits can be influenced by a variety of factors, including diet, hydration, stress, and underlying gastrointestinal conditions. A diet low in fiber can lead to softer stools, while certain foods can cause changes in stool color. For example, green stools may result from consuming a lot of leafy greens or foods with green dye, while yellow stools can be linked to dietary fats or malabsorption issues.
The fact that you previously had a regular bowel pattern that has now become irregular (1-2 times per week) is noteworthy. While it is common for bowel habits to fluctuate, significant changes—especially those that persist over several weeks—should not be ignored. The concern about the shape of your stools is also valid; while thinner stools can sometimes be a sign of a narrowing in the colon (which could be due to various reasons, including polyps or tumors), they can also occur due to other benign factors, such as muscle contractions in the intestines.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly diagnostic tests such as a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is particularly important if there are any alarming symptoms, such as blood in the stool, significant weight loss, or persistent abdominal pain.
In terms of lifestyle modifications, consider increasing your intake of dietary fiber through fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, as this can help normalize stool consistency. Staying well-hydrated is also crucial, as adequate fluid intake can facilitate smoother bowel movements. Regular physical activity can further promote healthy digestion and bowel function.
In summary, while your symptoms may not necessarily indicate a serious condition, the changes you've described warrant a consultation with a healthcare provider. They can help determine the underlying cause of your irregular bowel movements and recommend appropriate interventions. Remember, early detection and intervention are key in managing any potential gastrointestinal issues effectively. Don't hesitate to reach out to a medical professional for peace of mind and to ensure your health is prioritized.
