Postoperative Pain after Penile Curvature Surgery with Tunica Albuginea Folding Technique
Hello, Dr.
Hsu.
I underwent a foldable membrane surgery with absorbable sutures at National Taiwan University on November 11, 2014, performed by Dr.
Hsieh.
However, I have been experiencing intermittent pain (sharp pain) post-surgery, although the external appearance has returned to normal.
Could this indicate that the internal wound has not fully healed? I regularly supplement with high doses of vitamins, including vitamin B complex and vitamin C.
Will this help speed up the recovery process? How long does it typically take to recover after this type of surgery? Thank you for your response.

Mr.
Li: After surgery, you can apply local heat to shorten the recovery time.

Post-surgery pain, particularly after penile curvature surgery, can be a common concern for many patients. The procedure you underwent, known as the tunica albuginea folding technique, is designed to correct penile curvature by modifying the fibrous tissue surrounding the penis. While the external appearance may seem normal, it is not unusual to experience internal discomfort or pain during the recovery phase.
Typically, the recovery period after such surgery can vary significantly from patient to patient. Generally, the initial healing phase may take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. During this time, it is common to experience sensations such as sharp pain, aching, or a tingling feeling in the surgical area. These symptoms can be attributed to several factors, including nerve regeneration, inflammation, and the healing of internal tissues.
The presence of ongoing pain, especially if it is described as a sharp or stabbing sensation, may indicate that the internal tissues are still healing. It is essential to understand that the healing process involves not only the closure of the skin but also the regeneration of deeper tissues, which can take longer. If the pain persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult your surgeon or a urologist for a thorough evaluation.
Regarding your question about vitamin supplementation, maintaining a healthy diet and ensuring adequate intake of vitamins can support overall healing. Vitamins such as Vitamin C play a crucial role in collagen synthesis, which is vital for tissue repair. Vitamin B complex is also essential for nerve health and may help alleviate some discomfort associated with nerve regeneration. However, while these vitamins can aid in recovery, they are not a substitute for proper medical care and should be taken as part of a balanced diet.
In terms of activity during recovery, it is crucial to follow your surgeon's recommendations. Generally, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or any actions that may strain the surgical site for a specified period. Gradually increasing activity levels as tolerated is essential, but it is equally important to listen to your body and not push through pain.
If you are experiencing persistent pain, it is advisable to schedule a follow-up appointment with your surgeon. They can assess your healing progress and determine if any further interventions are necessary. It is also essential to discuss any concerns you have about your recovery, as they can provide tailored advice based on your specific situation.
In summary, while some discomfort after penile curvature surgery is normal, ongoing pain should be monitored closely. Recovery can take several weeks to months, and maintaining a healthy diet with appropriate vitamin intake can support healing. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and to address any concerns you may have during your recovery process.
