Pregnancy-related back pain

This is my third pregnancy, and I am currently three months along.
My lower back is extremely sore and painful, to the point that even turning over in bed is excruciating.
The day before yesterday, I sought help from a traditional Chinese medicine doctor, but the doctor was hesitant to treat me as a pregnant woman, so I was refunded my consultation fee and health insurance card.
I bought some traditional Chinese medicine patches to use at home, but the effects are not significant.
Is it true that during pregnancy, I just have to endure the pain?

Xiao A Miao, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/01/30

Managing pregnancy-related back pain can be quite challenging, especially during the third trimester when the body undergoes significant changes. It's important to understand that back pain during pregnancy is common, affecting many women due to various factors such as hormonal changes, weight gain, and the physical strain of carrying a growing baby. Here are some tips and strategies to help manage and alleviate back pain during pregnancy:
1. Proper Posture: Maintaining good posture is crucial. As your belly grows, it can shift your center of gravity, leading to poor posture. Stand tall, keep your shoulders back, and avoid slumping. When sitting, use a chair with good lumbar support or place a small cushion behind your lower back.

2. Physical Activity: While it may seem counterintuitive, gentle exercise can help alleviate back pain. Activities like walking, swimming, or prenatal yoga can strengthen your back and abdominal muscles, improving support for your spine. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise regimen.

3. Heat and Cold Therapy: Applying heat or cold to the affected area can provide relief. A warm bath, heating pad, or warm compress can help relax tense muscles. Alternatively, cold packs can reduce inflammation and numb sharp pain. Use whichever method feels best for you.

4. Massage Therapy: Prenatal massage can be beneficial for relieving back pain. A trained massage therapist can help alleviate tension and improve circulation. Be sure to seek out a therapist who specializes in prenatal massage to ensure safety.

5. Supportive Gear: Consider using a maternity support belt. These belts can help distribute the weight of your belly more evenly and provide additional support to your lower back. Additionally, wearing comfortable shoes with good arch support can help reduce strain on your back.

6. Sleep Positioning: Finding a comfortable sleeping position is essential. Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees to keep your spine aligned. You can also place a pillow under your abdomen for added support.

7. Physical Therapy: If your pain persists, consider consulting a physical therapist who specializes in prenatal care. They can provide tailored exercises and techniques to strengthen your back and alleviate pain.

8. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Stress can exacerbate pain, so incorporating relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle stretching can be beneficial. These practices can help you manage pain and improve your overall well-being.

9. Avoid Heavy Lifting: Be mindful of your movements and avoid lifting heavy objects. If you need to lift something, bend at your knees instead of your waist to protect your back.

10. Consult Your Healthcare Provider: If your pain is severe or persistent, it's essential to discuss it with your healthcare provider. They can rule out any underlying issues and may refer you to specialists if necessary.

It's important to remember that while back pain can be a common part of pregnancy, it doesn't mean you have to suffer through it. With the right strategies and support, you can manage your discomfort effectively. Always listen to your body and seek help when needed. Your well-being is paramount, not just for you but for your baby as well.
