There is a popping sound when swallowing saliva?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask you, since I caught a cold last November, I have been experiencing a popping sound (crackling sound) in my ears when swallowing saliva.
I have visited three major hospitals, and the doctors examined my eardrum and used a small mirror to check my throat, all of them said there was no issue and that it would gradually improve.
When I asked if I needed an endoscopy, the doctors said it was unnecessary.
I have been taking antihistamines due to ongoing allergy symptoms, but there has been no improvement.
I would like to ask you: 1.
If there is an abnormality in the throat, could it cause this condition? 2.
If the condition persists, will it have any negative effects?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hi Xiao Huang: Hello, the most common issue may be a temporary dysfunction of the Eustachian tube.
If you have already been examined by a physician and no specific problems were found, you can continue to manage your allergy symptoms and observe whether there is gradual improvement.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Crackling sounds in the ears, especially when swallowing, can be quite concerning and uncomfortable. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing this issue since a cold last November, and despite multiple consultations with ENT specialists, no significant abnormalities have been found. Let's delve into your questions and provide some insights into the potential causes and implications of your symptoms.
1. Could abnormalities in the throat cause this condition?
Yes, abnormalities in the throat can indeed contribute to the sensation of crackling sounds in the ears. The Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, plays a crucial role in equalizing ear pressure and draining fluid from the middle ear. If there is inflammation or dysfunction in the Eustachian tube, which can occur due to allergies, infections, or anatomical variations, it may lead to abnormal sounds when swallowing or yawning. This is often referred to as Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). In your case, since you mentioned having ongoing allergic symptoms, it is possible that the inflammation associated with allergies is affecting the Eustachian tube's ability to function properly, leading to the crackling sounds you experience.
2. If the condition persists, could it have negative effects?
Persistent crackling sounds in the ears, especially if accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, hearing loss, or a feeling of fullness, should not be ignored. While the sound itself may not be harmful, it can indicate underlying issues that may need to be addressed. Chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction can lead to complications such as fluid accumulation in the middle ear (otitis media with effusion), which can affect hearing and may require medical intervention. Additionally, if the dysfunction is related to allergies, ongoing exposure to allergens without management could lead to further complications, including chronic sinusitis or recurrent ear infections.
Given your situation, it is advisable to continue working with your healthcare provider to explore potential treatments for your allergies, as managing these symptoms may alleviate the crackling sounds. Intranasal corticosteroids or other allergy medications may be beneficial in reducing inflammation and improving Eustachian tube function. If your symptoms persist or worsen, further evaluation, including imaging studies or referral to a specialist in allergy or otolaryngology, may be warranted to rule out any structural issues or other underlying conditions.
In summary, while crackling sounds in the ears when swallowing can be benign, they may also indicate Eustachian tube dysfunction, particularly in the context of allergies. It is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek further evaluation if they persist, as addressing any underlying issues can help improve your quality of life and prevent potential complications. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
