Thumb Injury from Ball Impact: When to See an Orthopedic Specialist - Orthopedics

Finger injury caused by a ball?

About a week ago, my thumb was hit by a ball, causing pain in the flexor pollicis brevis muscle.
I immediately applied ice, but there was swelling from the flexor pollicis brevis to the abductor pollicis brevis.
The next day, I went to a traditional Chinese medicine clinic for acupuncture, electrical therapy, and topical medication.
The swelling has now subsided, but I still experience pain whenever I exert force with my thumb.
Activities like writing, typing, and using chopsticks cause pain.
Should I see an orthopedic specialist?

Hello: Please visit the orthopedic outpatient clinic for a thorough examination by a physician, supplemented by X-ray imaging, to confirm whether there are any fractures or muscle and ligament injuries.

In your case, it sounds like you have sustained a thumb injury that is causing persistent pain and swelling, particularly in the area of the flexor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis brevis muscles. Given that you have already sought treatment through acupuncture and electrical stimulation, and while you have seen some reduction in swelling, the ongoing pain during activities such as writing, typing, and using chopsticks indicates that further evaluation is warranted.

When it comes to thumb injuries, especially those resulting from blunt trauma like being hit by a ball, there are several potential issues that could arise. These include soft tissue injuries, such as strains or sprains of the muscles and tendons, as well as possible ligament injuries or even fractures that may not have been evident on initial examination. The fact that you experience pain with specific movements suggests that there may be an underlying issue that requires more specialized attention.

It is advisable to see an orthopedic specialist, particularly one who focuses on hand and wrist injuries. An orthopedic evaluation typically includes a thorough physical examination, where the doctor will assess your range of motion, strength, and any areas of tenderness. They may also perform imaging studies, such as X-rays or an MRI, to rule out fractures or assess the condition of the soft tissues and ligaments.

In terms of treatment, if a fracture is identified, it may require immobilization with a splint or cast, and in some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary. If the injury is primarily soft tissue-related, the orthopedic specialist may recommend a tailored rehabilitation program that includes physical therapy to strengthen the muscles and improve function. They may also suggest modalities such as ultrasound therapy or specific exercises to promote healing.

Additionally, it is important to manage your pain effectively. Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce pain and inflammation, but you should consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new medication.

In summary, given your symptoms and the impact on your daily activities, it is prudent to seek an evaluation from an orthopedic specialist. Early intervention can help prevent long-term complications and facilitate a more effective recovery. Remember, the sooner you address the issue, the better your chances of returning to full function without chronic pain or limitations.
