Daughter's discharge?

Hello, doctor.
My two daughters are both in sixth grade and have started their periods.
However, I notice that when I wash their underwear, there is a small amount of discharge every day.
What could that be? Also, their period started on April 11, and now it's the fourth day.
They have been feeling a bit itchy these past two days.
I also feel a bit strange because I have a strong desire for intimacy during their menstrual period, but I know I shouldn't.
Thank you.

A small amount of vaginal discharge in young girls is not necessarily a problem.
If there is itching during menstruation, topical ointments can be used for treatment.
Avoiding sexual intercourse during this period can help prevent pelvic infections.

Understanding vaginal discharge and menstrual symptoms in preteens is an important topic that many parents may find confusing. It’s great that you’re seeking information to better understand your daughters’ experiences.
Firstly, it's completely normal for preteens and young adolescents to experience vaginal discharge. This discharge is often a sign of normal hormonal changes occurring in their bodies as they approach puberty. The discharge can vary in color, consistency, and amount, and is typically clear or white. It serves to keep the vaginal area clean and moist, and it helps to prevent infections.
In your daughters' case, the presence of a small amount of white discharge on their underwear is likely normal and not a cause for concern. However, if the discharge has a strong odor, changes color (especially to green or yellow), or is accompanied by itching or irritation, it could indicate an infection, and it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider.

Regarding the menstrual cycle, it’s common for young girls to experience various symptoms during their periods, including cramps, mood swings, and sometimes itching. The itching sensation you mentioned could be due to several factors. It might be related to hormonal changes, irritation from menstrual products (like pads or tampons), or even a mild yeast infection, which is not uncommon during menstruation. If the itching persists or worsens, it would be wise to have them evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any infections or other issues.

As for the feelings of sexual desire during menstruation, this is also a normal part of human sexuality. Hormonal fluctuations can influence libido, and it’s not unusual for individuals to experience increased sexual feelings at various times, including during their menstrual cycle. It’s important to have open and honest conversations with your daughters about these feelings, ensuring they understand their bodies and emotions in a healthy way.

In summary, the vaginal discharge your daughters are experiencing is likely normal, but any changes in odor, color, or accompanying symptoms should be addressed with a healthcare provider. Additionally, menstrual symptoms such as itching can be common, but persistent issues should also be evaluated. Lastly, discussing feelings of sexual desire openly can help them navigate their emotions as they grow. It’s essential to provide them with accurate information and support as they go through these changes.

Normal discharge is clear, but after a few hours of contact with underwear, it can turn yellow due to bacterial action. Therefore, seeing yellow discharge on underwear does not necessarily indicate a problem. If there are any concerns, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.
