Urinary tract infection (UTI)
Hello, I am currently 15 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing severe abdominal pain.
The doctor diagnosed me with a urinary tract infection and prescribed Acetaminophen and Cephradine.
Is it safe for pregnant women to take these medications? Also, how can a urinary tract infection cause such intense pain that it makes it difficult to walk? What can I do to prevent the infection? What should I be aware of moving forward, as I am very concerned about the impact on my baby? Thank you.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common concern during pregnancy, affecting many women due to physiological changes in the urinary system. When pregnant, the growing uterus can exert pressure on the bladder, leading to incomplete emptying and creating an environment conducive to bacterial growth. This can result in symptoms such as abdominal pain, frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, and, in some cases, severe discomfort that may hinder mobility.
In your case, the physician has prescribed Acetaminophen and Cephradine. Acetaminophen is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy for pain relief and fever reduction. Cephradine, a type of cephalosporin antibiotic, is also typically safe for treating UTIs in pregnant women. However, it is essential to follow your healthcare provider's instructions and report any adverse reactions or concerns during treatment.
The severity of pain associated with a UTI can vary significantly. In some cases, the infection may irritate the bladder and surrounding tissues, leading to intense pain that can feel debilitating. If the infection progresses to involve the kidneys (pyelonephritis), it can cause more severe symptoms, including fever, chills, and back pain, which may require hospitalization. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely and seek immediate medical attention if they worsen or if you experience new symptoms.
To prevent UTIs during pregnancy, consider the following measures:
1. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water, to help flush out bacteria from the urinary tract. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.
2. Urination Habits: Urinate frequently and do not hold it in. Empty your bladder completely each time you go to the bathroom.
3. Post-Urination Care: Wipe from front to back after using the toilet to prevent bacteria from the rectal area from entering the urethra.
4. Hygiene: Maintain good personal hygiene, especially before and after sexual intercourse. Consider urinating after sex to help flush out any bacteria.
5. Clothing Choices: Wear breathable cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing to reduce moisture buildup.
6. Diet: Incorporate foods that may help prevent UTIs, such as cranberries or probiotics, which can promote urinary tract health.
After experiencing a UTI, it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider to ensure the infection has cleared and to discuss any ongoing symptoms. Regular prenatal check-ups are crucial for monitoring both your health and the health of your baby. If you have concerns about the impact of the infection or medications on your pregnancy, do not hesitate to discuss them with your obstetrician.
In summary, while UTIs can be concerning during pregnancy, they are typically manageable with appropriate medical care and preventive measures. Staying informed and proactive about your health will help ensure a safer pregnancy for you and your baby. If you have any further questions or experience any alarming symptoms, please reach out to your healthcare provider promptly.
