Narrowing of stool?
Hello Doctor: My bowel movement frequency has always been quite good, typically once a day or at least every two days.
Since June of this year, I have been focusing on weight loss and health maintenance.
In addition to drinking over 2000cc of water daily, I have been controlling my calorie intake, eating a light diet rich in fruits and vegetables, exercising for over 40 minutes every day, and trying to get more than 7 hours of sleep.
About two weeks ago, I started experiencing mild diarrhea, which has continued until this week.
My stools have begun to take shape but have become quite thin, sometimes about the width of my index or thumb, whereas they used to be quite thick, around 2.5 to 3 finger widths.
I do not experience abdominal pain during bowel movements, nor is there any bleeding, but I would like to ask what could be the possible reasons for the change in stool thickness? I am a bit concerned about the possibility of colon polyps and would like to know if it is necessary to undergo further examination.
Thank you.
Joyce, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/03

Hello, there may be recent occurrences of gastroenteritis.
It is recommended to consume less oil, less dairy, and fewer raw or cold foods.
If your stool returns to a normal consistency, there is no need to worry.
Polyps generally do not grow large enough to cause a change in stool caliber.
However, if it is a tumor, once it grows large enough to cause a narrowing of the stool, it will not revert to a wider caliber.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Changes in stool size can be concerning, especially when they deviate from what is considered normal for an individual. In your case, the transition from regular bowel movements to experiencing diarrhea followed by the formation of thinner stools is noteworthy. While it’s commendable that you have adopted a healthier lifestyle with increased hydration, a balanced diet, and regular exercise, the changes in your stool could be indicative of several underlying issues.
One of the primary concerns with a significant change in stool size, particularly if they become thinner or pencil-like, is the potential for an obstruction in the colon. This could be due to various reasons, including the presence of polyps, strictures, or even tumors. While you mentioned that you do not experience abdominal pain or rectal bleeding, which are often associated with more serious conditions, it is still essential to take these changes seriously.
The fact that you have experienced diarrhea could also suggest a temporary gastrointestinal upset, possibly related to dietary changes or stress. However, the persistence of thinner stools warrants further investigation. It is important to note that while lifestyle changes can positively impact bowel health, they can also lead to temporary fluctuations in bowel habits.
In terms of when to seek medical advice, it is generally recommended to consult a healthcare provider if you notice any of the following:
1. A significant change in your bowel habits that persists for more than a few weeks.
2. The presence of blood in your stool or black, tarry stools.
3. Unexplained weight loss.
4. Persistent abdominal pain or discomfort.
5. Changes in appetite or energy levels.
Given your concerns about the possibility of colorectal polyps or other abnormalities, it would be prudent to schedule an appointment with a gastroenterologist. They may recommend a colonoscopy, which is a procedure that allows for direct visualization of the colon and rectum, enabling the identification and potential removal of polyps or other abnormalities.
In conclusion, while your current symptoms may not immediately indicate a severe condition, the changes in stool size and consistency, especially when combined with your recent dietary changes, should not be overlooked. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to gastrointestinal health. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional can provide peace of mind and ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly. Remember, early detection and intervention are key in managing gastrointestinal health effectively.
