Uterine fibroids
My last menstrual period started on May 14, and it still hasn't arrived.
I went to see a gynecologist and found out that there is a more than 4 cm uterine fibroid on the right ovary.
Could this be affecting my menstrual cycle?

Dr. Lin Wenbin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Uterine fibroids refer to tumors that grow in the uterus.
When uterine fibroids are large, they may affect menstruation.
However, irregular menstruation is not necessarily caused by fibroids, and a clinic examination is needed to determine the cause.

More Info
Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus and can indeed have a significant impact on a woman's menstrual cycle. These fibroids can vary in size, number, and location within the uterus, and their presence can lead to various symptoms, including changes in menstrual patterns.
In your case, the discovery of a 4 cm fibroid on the right ovary may be contributing to your menstrual irregularities. Fibroids can cause heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), prolonged periods, and even spotting between periods. They can also lead to pelvic pain and pressure, which might further complicate your menstrual cycle. The hormonal changes that fibroids can induce may also affect the regularity of your cycle, potentially causing delays or missed periods.
The mechanism behind how fibroids affect menstruation is primarily related to their size and location. Larger fibroids, especially those located within the uterine cavity (submucosal fibroids), can disrupt the normal shedding of the uterine lining, leading to heavier and more painful periods. Additionally, fibroids can interfere with the blood supply to the uterus, which can also contribute to abnormal bleeding patterns.
It's important to note that while fibroids can cause menstrual irregularities, other factors such as hormonal imbalances, stress, weight changes, and underlying health conditions can also play a role. Therefore, it is essential to consider a comprehensive evaluation by your healthcare provider to determine the exact cause of your menstrual changes.
If your fibroid is indeed affecting your menstrual cycle, treatment options may vary based on the severity of your symptoms, your overall health, and your reproductive plans. Options may include medication to manage symptoms, hormonal therapies to regulate your cycle, or surgical interventions if the fibroid is significantly impacting your quality of life or if you are experiencing severe symptoms.
In conclusion, yes, uterine fibroids can affect your menstrual cycle, and the presence of a 4 cm fibroid may be contributing to your current situation. It is advisable to discuss your symptoms and treatment options with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action tailored to your individual needs. Regular monitoring and follow-up are crucial to managing fibroids and any associated symptoms effectively.
