Height issues
Hello, doctor.
I will turn 20 years old this October, but my height is only 160 cm.
Both of my parents are around 165 cm tall.
Since the end of junior high school, I have not grown taller, and now I am about to enter my second year of college.
I am unsure if there is still a chance for me to grow taller.
If I need to seek medical attention, which department should I visit at National Cheng Kung University Hospital? Will they take X-rays of my growth plates? What recommendations do you have, doctor?
Sheng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/08
Dr. He Shenglong reply Pediatrics
Hello: Your condition is suitable for consultation with an endocrinologist.
Since you are about to turn 20, your height is likely to remain the same.
I believe that height itself is not necessarily a disadvantage, and I suggest you leverage your own strengths.
For further evaluation, please visit the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at National Cheng Kung University.
Thank you for your message!

When it comes to height concerns in young adults, especially for someone who is approaching their twenties, it is essential to understand the biological factors that influence growth and the appropriate steps to take if you are seeking to address these concerns.
At the age of 20, it is generally accepted that most individuals have reached their maximum height, as the growth plates in the bones typically close after puberty. For males, this closure usually occurs around the ages of 16 to 18, while for females, it tends to happen a bit earlier, around 14 to 16. Since you mentioned that your height has remained stable since the end of middle school, it is likely that your growth plates have already closed, which means that further natural height increase is improbable.
If you are considering seeking medical advice, the appropriate department to consult would be an endocrinology clinic, particularly one that specializes in pediatric or adolescent endocrinology. These specialists can evaluate your growth history, assess your bone age through X-rays, and determine whether there are any underlying hormonal issues that could have affected your growth.
During the consultation, the doctor will likely perform a physical examination and may order an X-ray of your hand and wrist to assess your bone age. This is a standard procedure that helps determine whether your growth plates are still open or have fused. If the growth plates are closed, it confirms that you have likely reached your final height.
In terms of recommendations, if you are feeling self-conscious about your height, it is crucial to focus on aspects of your life that you can control. Building self-esteem and confidence can significantly impact how you perceive yourself and how others perceive you. Engaging in activities that you enjoy, pursuing your interests, and surrounding yourself with supportive friends and family can help shift your focus away from height concerns.
Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep is essential for overall well-being. While these factors may not directly influence height at your age, they contribute to a positive self-image and physical health.
If you are still feeling distressed about your height, consider speaking with a mental health professional. They can provide support and strategies to help you cope with any feelings of inadequacy or anxiety related to your height. Remember, height does not define your worth or capabilities, and many successful individuals come in all shapes and sizes.
In summary, while the likelihood of further height increase is minimal at your age, consulting with an endocrinologist can provide clarity on your growth status. Focus on building your self-esteem and engaging in activities that make you feel confident and fulfilled. Height is just one aspect of who you are, and embracing your unique qualities will lead to a more satisfying and confident life.
