Renal white spots
Hello, I would like to inquire about a situation.
A family member underwent surgery to remove a lipoma from the left kidney earlier this year.
During a recent health check-up, the ultrasound technician mentioned a 0.4 cm white spot on the left kidney.
Could this possibly be due to scarring from the surgical incision made earlier this year, which is why the ultrasound shows this 0.4 cm white spot? My family member is a bit anxious and has already scheduled a follow-up appointment for early August (the check-ups every three months since the surgery have shown good recovery with no recurrence), but I happened to see that there is a consultation channel here, so I wanted to ask first.

Dr. Lin Wenxu reply Urology
It is certainly possible that it is postoperative scarring or calcification.
There is no need to be overly anxious at this point.
It is advisable to return to the hospital where the surgery was performed for further follow-up and evaluation.

After undergoing surgery for a renal lipoma, it is understandable to be concerned about any new findings, such as the 0.4 cm white spot observed on the ultrasound of the left kidney. This situation raises several important considerations regarding the potential causes of the white spot and the implications for your family member's health.
Firstly, it is essential to recognize that post-surgical changes can occur in the kidney. After any surgical procedure, including the removal of a tumor, the body undergoes a healing process that may result in scar tissue formation. This scar tissue can sometimes appear as a white spot on imaging studies such as ultrasound. The presence of a white spot does not automatically indicate a new tumor or malignancy; it could simply be a benign post-surgical change.
In addition to scar tissue, there are other potential causes for the white spot observed on the ultrasound. These may include:
1. Cysts: Simple renal cysts are common and usually benign. They can appear as white spots on imaging and are often asymptomatic.
2. Calcifications: Sometimes, calcifications can form in the kidney tissue as a result of previous injury or inflammation. These can also appear as white spots on ultrasound.
3. Residual or Recurrent Tumor: While your family member has had regular follow-ups showing no recurrence, it is still important to consider the possibility of residual tumor tissue or a new growth. This is why continued monitoring is crucial.
4. Infection or Inflammation: In some cases, an infection or inflammatory process can lead to changes in the kidney that might be visible on imaging.
Given that your family member has already scheduled a follow-up appointment, this is a prudent step. The healthcare provider will likely recommend further imaging studies, such as a CT scan or MRI, which can provide more detailed information about the nature of the white spot. Additionally, they may consider laboratory tests to assess kidney function and rule out any underlying issues.
It is also worth noting that anxiety and concern about health issues are common, especially after surgery for a condition like a renal lipoma. It is important to maintain open communication with healthcare providers and to ask questions about any findings or concerns. Understanding the nature of the white spot and the rationale for further testing can help alleviate anxiety.
In conclusion, while the appearance of a 0.4 cm white spot on the left kidney after surgery can be concerning, it is essential to consider the various benign explanations for this finding. The scheduled follow-up appointment will be crucial in determining the exact nature of the white spot and ensuring that your family member continues to receive appropriate care. Regular monitoring and communication with healthcare professionals are key components in managing health after surgery.
