Taking Yejizhong?

Hello, doctor.
I am currently taking Yaz.
In April, I visited a gynecologist who diagnosed me with hormonal imbalance and prescribed birth control pills.
May was the first time in my life that I took birth control pills, so I have many questions! After taking Yaz in May, I experienced brown discharge that persisted until I finished the 21-day pack, and then my menstrual cycle started.
However, the brown discharge did not stop.
I initially thought it was just residual menstrual flow, but two weeks later, it was still present! I called the clinic to ask about it, and the pharmacist said it was normal and advised me to continue taking it for three months to see how it goes.
However, on the first day of June when I was supposed to take it, I forgot to buy the pills and delayed for two days, so I decided to start again in July.
(But during June, when I didn't take the pills, everything was normal, and there was no brown discharge.) After starting Yaz again in July, the brown discharge has continued without stopping.
I would like to know if this is normal or if switching brands would be better.
What should I do if the discharge persists after taking it for three months? Should I stop taking the medication? But I need it to regulate my female hormones.

Nai Cha, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/17

Wishing you good health.

Understanding brown discharge while taking birth control pills can be a common concern for many women, especially those who are new to hormonal contraceptives. It’s important to understand the underlying mechanisms of how birth control pills work and the potential side effects they may cause.

When you start taking birth control pills, especially for the first time, your body undergoes hormonal adjustments. Birth control pills contain synthetic hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining. These changes can lead to various side effects, one of which may include irregular bleeding or spotting, often referred to as breakthrough bleeding. This can manifest as brown discharge, which is typically old blood that takes longer to exit the body.

In your case, the brown discharge you experienced while taking the "悅己" (Yue Ji) birth control pills could be attributed to several factors:
1. Hormonal Adjustment: Since you mentioned that you started taking the pill in May, your body may still be adjusting to the new hormone levels. It’s not uncommon for women to experience irregular bleeding or spotting during the first few months of starting a new contraceptive method.

2. Breakthrough Bleeding: As mentioned earlier, breakthrough bleeding is a common side effect of hormonal contraceptives. It can occur at any time during the cycle, and while it can be concerning, it is usually not a sign of a serious problem. The fact that you experienced this for an extended period (until your next menstrual cycle) is not unusual for new users of birth control pills.

3. Missed Doses: You noted that you missed taking the pill for two days in June. Missing doses can lead to hormonal fluctuations, which may cause irregular bleeding or spotting. It’s crucial to take your pills consistently at the same time each day to maintain stable hormone levels.

4. Duration of Use: Your pharmacist advised you to continue taking the pills for three months to see if the spotting resolves. This is a common recommendation, as many women find that their bodies adjust to the hormones over time, and the irregular bleeding often decreases or stops after a few cycles.

5. Consultation with Healthcare Provider: If the brown discharge persists beyond three months or if you experience other concerning symptoms (such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection), it’s essential to consult your healthcare provider. They may suggest switching to a different brand or type of birth control pill that may be better suited for your body.

6. Normal Variations: It’s also worth noting that some women may experience brown discharge due to other factors unrelated to birth control, such as stress, changes in diet, or other health conditions.
In conclusion, while brown discharge while taking birth control pills can be concerning, it is often a normal side effect as your body adjusts to the hormones. If you continue to have concerns or if the discharge does not resolve after a few months, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and potential adjustment of your contraceptive method. Remember, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider about any side effects you experience is crucial for your reproductive health.
