The effects of local anesthesia on the fetus?
Hello doctor, my last menstrual period was on June 27.
I had unprotected intercourse on July 12, which was during my fertile window, so there is a possibility of pregnancy.
I would like to ask you, on July 16, I underwent a cosmetic procedure where a local anesthetic was applied to my cheeks for 30 minutes, and then I received approximately 6 to 7 injections of local anesthetic around my hairline and both cheeks.
That evening, my face was a bit swollen, so I took one antibiotic pill, and that was the only one I took.
I would like to know if these actions could affect the fetus if I become pregnant later on?

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
The dosage of the local anesthetic is very low, and the antibiotic is only taken once.
Moreover, it was administered three days after sexual intercourse, which means the embryo may not have implanted yet, so it should not affect the fetus.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
The concern regarding the impact of local anesthesia on fetal development is a common one, especially among women who may be in the early stages of pregnancy or are planning to conceive. Based on the information provided, it appears that you underwent a cosmetic procedure involving local anesthesia shortly after a potential conception date.
Local anesthesia, such as lidocaine or similar agents, is generally considered safe for use during early pregnancy. The primary reason for this is that local anesthetics are designed to act locally at the site of administration, minimizing systemic absorption and reducing the likelihood of any significant effects on the fetus. The doses used in cosmetic procedures are typically low, and the anesthetic is not expected to cross the placental barrier in significant amounts.
In your specific case, since the local anesthetic was applied to your face and the procedure occurred only a few days after potential conception, it is important to note that the embryo would likely still be in the early stages of development, possibly not even implanted yet. The timing of your procedure suggests that the embryo was still in the process of cell division and had not yet begun to differentiate into various organ systems. This is a critical period, as the risk of teratogenic effects (causing malformations) is generally higher during organogenesis, which occurs later in the first trimester.
Regarding the antibiotic you took, a single dose of an antibiotic is unlikely to have any significant impact on fetal development, especially if it was a commonly prescribed medication that is considered safe during pregnancy. However, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider regarding any medications taken during this sensitive period.
In summary, based on current medical understanding, the use of local anesthesia in cosmetic procedures shortly after potential conception is unlikely to adversely affect fetal development. The low doses used, combined with the timing of the procedure, suggest that any risk is minimal. However, if you do become pregnant, it is advisable to maintain regular prenatal care and discuss any concerns with your obstetrician. They can provide personalized guidance and reassurance based on your specific circumstances.
Additionally, it is essential to consider that the overall health of the mother, including her nutrition, stress levels, and exposure to harmful substances, plays a significant role in fetal development. Therefore, focusing on a healthy lifestyle and following medical advice during pregnancy is crucial for the well-being of both the mother and the baby. If you have any lingering concerns or experience any unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and support.

Dr. Huang Yuande reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Basically, there will be some impact, but a single X-ray should not have a significant effect. The impact caused by medication is approximately between 0.5% to 1%. Therefore, it is still necessary to undergo prenatal check-ups and consultations. What I emphasize is the concept of...[Read More] Impact of Laparoscopic Surgery and Anesthesia on Early Pregnancy
