Inquire about obstetrics and gynecology?
I visited a gynecologist on July 9 and found out I was pregnant.
Since I am not able to support a child, I asked the doctor to prescribe RU486, which I took.
On July 16, I returned for a follow-up, and the doctor confirmed that I had expelled the pregnancy.
The doctor then prescribed medication to help with uterine contractions and bleeding, to be taken after each meal, and advised me to stop once my menstrual cycle (MC) ceased.
However, as of July 20, my menstrual cycle has not stopped, and I am running out of medication.
How long will it take for the bleeding to stop?

Dr. Yang Wangjun reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello: The likelihood of incomplete abortion is higher when using RU-486.
If there is still uterine bleeding three weeks later, it is advisable to seek medical attention for a uterine aspiration.

After undergoing a medical abortion using the medication RU486, it is common to have questions regarding the recovery process, particularly concerning menstrual cycles. Based on your timeline, you took the medication on July 9, and by July 16, your doctor confirmed that the pregnancy had been expelled. Following this, you were prescribed medication to help with uterine contractions and to manage bleeding.
It is important to understand that after a medical abortion, the body goes through a significant hormonal adjustment. The timing of when your menstrual cycle will return to normal can vary widely among individuals. Typically, after a medical abortion, it may take anywhere from a few days to several weeks for bleeding to stop completely. In some cases, it can take longer, especially if the abortion was performed early in the pregnancy.
The medication you were prescribed to help with uterine contractions is intended to reduce bleeding and promote the uterus's return to its pre-pregnancy state. However, it is not uncommon for some women to experience prolonged bleeding or spotting after an abortion. Factors that can influence the duration of bleeding include:
1. Individual Variation: Each person's body responds differently to hormonal changes. Some may experience a quick return to their normal cycle, while others may have prolonged bleeding.
2. Gestational Age: The length of the pregnancy before the abortion can also affect recovery. Generally, the earlier the pregnancy, the quicker the recovery, but this is not a strict rule.
3. Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as fibroids, polyps, or hormonal imbalances can also affect bleeding patterns.
4. Medications: The medications you are taking can influence how your body responds post-abortion. If you are still experiencing heavy bleeding or if the bleeding has not decreased by the time you finish your medication, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider.
As for your specific question about when the bleeding will stop, it is difficult to provide an exact timeframe. Many women find that their bleeding decreases significantly within a week or two after the procedure, but some may continue to have light bleeding or spotting for several weeks. If you are concerned about the amount of bleeding or if you experience any signs of complications (such as severe pain, fever, or passing large clots), it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while it is common for bleeding to continue for a period after a medical abortion, if you find that it is excessive or prolonged beyond what you consider normal, please reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. They can assess your situation and provide you with the best advice tailored to your health needs.
