Dark red blood after menstruation?
On July 10, menstruation started and ended on July 14.
After intercourse on July 15, there was still bleeding, which continued until July 18.
After intercourse on July 20, on the evening of July 21, I noticed a significant amount of very dark red blood when wiping after using the restroom.
Sometimes there is bleeding, and sometimes there isn't.
What could be the cause of this?

Understanding dark red blood after menstruation can be concerning, especially when it appears unexpectedly after sexual intercourse. There are several potential causes for this phenomenon, and it’s important to consider various factors to determine the underlying issue.
Firstly, the dark red color of the blood may indicate older blood that has taken longer to exit the body. This can happen if there is residual blood left in the uterus after menstruation. The menstrual cycle can vary significantly from person to person, and it’s not uncommon for some individuals to experience spotting or bleeding after their period has officially ended. This is often referred to as "post-menstrual spotting" and can be caused by hormonal fluctuations, which may lead to the shedding of the uterine lining.
Another possible explanation for the dark red blood after sexual intercourse could be related to cervical or vaginal irritation. During intercourse, friction can cause minor injuries to the delicate tissues of the vagina or cervix, leading to light bleeding. If this bleeding occurs, it may appear darker due to the nature of the blood and the time it takes to exit the body. If the bleeding is accompanied by pain or discomfort, it may be wise to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions.
Additionally, conditions such as polyps, fibroids, or infections can also lead to abnormal bleeding. Uterine polyps or fibroids are benign growths that can cause irregular bleeding patterns, including bleeding after menstruation. Infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can also lead to abnormal bleeding and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
It is also essential to consider the timing of your menstrual cycle. If your menstrual cycle is irregular, it could lead to unexpected bleeding at various times. Stress, significant weight changes, or hormonal imbalances can all contribute to irregular cycles and unexpected bleeding.
If you experience dark red blood after menstruation, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or a foul odor, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, which may include a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or other diagnostic tests to determine the cause of the bleeding.
In summary, while dark red blood after menstruation can be a normal occurrence for some individuals, it can also indicate underlying issues that may require medical attention. It is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult a healthcare provider if you have concerns about abnormal bleeding, especially if it persists or worsens. Regular gynecological check-ups are also crucial for maintaining reproductive health and addressing any potential issues early on.
