Eyelid pain?
I would like to ask the doctor, two days ago, when I gently rubbed my left eye, I noticed a pain near the eyelid close to the lash line.
Could this be a precursor to symptoms? About 3 to 4 weeks ago, I experienced acute conjunctivitis and eyelid laceration in my left eye (which has since healed).
Additionally, my right eye had a stone issue 2 to 3 weeks ago.
I would like to know if this could be a precursor to a stone or other symptoms.
What preventive or health maintenance actions should I take?
Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/31
Dr. Wang Zhangji reply Ophthalmology
1.
Unfortunately, a physical examination is necessary to determine the cause of the condition.
2.
It is advisable to avoid rubbing the eyes.

More Info
Eyelid pain can be a concerning symptom, especially when it follows a history of eye issues such as conjunctivitis or chalazia (commonly referred to as "eye stones"). Given your recent experiences with acute conjunctivitis and chalazia, it is important to understand the potential causes of your current eyelid pain, as well as preventive measures you can take to maintain eye health.
Symptoms and Causes
The pain you are experiencing near the eyelash roots could be attributed to several factors:
1. Eyelid Inflammation: Conditions such as blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid margins) can cause discomfort and pain. This condition often results from bacterial infections, seborrheic dermatitis, or allergies.
2. Residual Effects of Previous Conditions: Since you mentioned having acute conjunctivitis and chalazia in the past few weeks, it is possible that the tissues around your eyelids are still sensitive or inflamed from these previous conditions.
3. Chalazia or Stye: If you had a chalazion (a blocked oil gland) or a stye (an infection of an oil gland), the pain could be a sign of recurrence or a new blockage. Chalazia can sometimes develop after an infection or inflammation.
4. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to cosmetics, contact lenses, or environmental factors can lead to eyelid pain and discomfort.
5. Dry Eyes: Prolonged screen time or environmental factors can lead to dry eyes, which may cause eyelid discomfort.
Prevention and Care Tips
To prevent further issues and manage your current symptoms, consider the following tips:
1. Maintain Eye Hygiene: Regularly clean your eyelids with a gentle eyelid scrub or diluted baby shampoo to remove debris and reduce inflammation. This is particularly important if you have a history of blepharitis.
2. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to your eyelids can help soothe discomfort and promote drainage if there is a blockage. Use a clean cloth soaked in warm water, and apply it for about 10-15 minutes.
3. Limit Eye Strain: If you spend long hours in front of screens, practice the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain and fatigue.
4. Stay Hydrated: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day to maintain overall hydration, which can help with dry eyes.
5. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes: Rubbing can exacerbate irritation and lead to further inflammation. If you feel the urge to rub, try to redirect that impulse.
6. Consult an Eye Care Professional: Given your history of eye conditions, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist if the pain persists or worsens. They can provide a thorough examination and determine if there are underlying issues that need to be addressed.
7. Consider Allergies: If you suspect allergies may be contributing to your symptoms, consider using hypoallergenic products and avoiding known allergens.
Conclusion
In summary, the pain you are experiencing in your eyelid could be related to previous eye conditions or new issues such as inflammation or blockage. Maintaining good eye hygiene, using warm compresses, and managing screen time can help alleviate symptoms and prevent future occurrences. However, if the pain continues or you notice other concerning symptoms, seeking professional medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment. Your eye health is important, and taking proactive steps can help ensure your eyes remain comfortable and healthy.
