Retinal issues
Recently, I have experienced occasional flashes in my eyes, similar to a light bulb flickering a few times.
The frequency is low, but it feels strange.
What could be the issue? If a small part of the retina is thinning, should I undergo laser treatment first? What is the likelihood of a retinal tear, especially since I have a prescription of -7.00 diopters and a portion of my retina is very thin? Thank you.

Understanding retinal issues is crucial for maintaining eye health, especially when experiencing symptoms like flashes of light or visual disturbances. The symptoms you describe, such as sudden flashes of light resembling a flickering bulb, can be indicative of several retinal conditions, including retinal detachment or posterior vitreous detachment. These conditions occur when the vitreous gel that fills the eye pulls away from the retina, which can lead to the perception of flashes or floaters.
Flashes of light are often harmless, especially if they occur infrequently. However, if they become more frequent or are accompanied by other symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, a shadow or curtain over your vision, or a significant decrease in vision, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more serious condition, such as retinal detachment, which requires prompt treatment to prevent permanent vision loss.
Regarding your question about retinal thinning, it is important to understand that a thin area of the retina can increase the risk of retinal tears or detachment. If a small part of your retina is thin, your eye care professional may recommend monitoring it closely. In some cases, laser treatment may be advised to create a barrier around the thin area to prevent a tear from occurring. This procedure, known as laser photocoagulation, can help reinforce the retina and reduce the risk of detachment.
As for the likelihood of developing a retinal tear, it can vary based on several factors, including the degree of myopia (nearsightedness) you have. Individuals with high myopia, such as your case with 700 degrees, are at a higher risk for retinal issues due to the elongation of the eyeball, which can lead to retinal thinning and increased susceptibility to tears. Regular eye examinations are crucial for early detection and management of any potential issues.
In summary, if you are experiencing flashes of light or have concerns about the health of your retina, it is essential to consult with an eye care professional. They may perform a comprehensive eye examination, including a dilated fundus examination, to assess the condition of your retina. Depending on their findings, they will determine the best course of action, which may include monitoring, laser treatment, or other interventions to protect your vision.
In addition to seeking professional advice, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also support eye health. This includes a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, regular exercise, and protecting your eyes from UV exposure. If you have any underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, managing these effectively is also crucial for preserving your vision.
In conclusion, while occasional flashes of light can be benign, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult with an eye care professional to rule out any serious conditions, especially given your history of high myopia and retinal thinning. Regular check-ups and proactive management can help ensure the best possible outcomes for your eye health.
