I would like to ask if I have brown discharge a few days after ovulation and before my period, and as I get closer to the expected date of my period, I notice a little bit of blood on the toilet paper when I use the restroom.
If my period does come in two days, can I take the emergency contraceptive pill (for the first time)? I plan to take Ella.
Also, could you please explain what the brown discharge might indicate? >_<

1.
The appearance of brown discharge can have many possible causes, such as mild menstrual irregularities, cervical inflammation, or the presence of polyps, among others.
In older women, the possibility of tumors should also be considered.
2.
If menstruation begins in a couple of days and there are no other discomforts, it is still possible to take contraceptive pills.
However, if the bleeding increases or persists, or if it is accompanied by abdominal pain or an increase in vaginal discharge, it is advisable to consult a physician before deciding whether to take contraceptive pills.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Brown discharge before your period can be a common occurrence and is often not a cause for concern. This type of discharge typically consists of old blood that has taken longer to exit the body, which can happen for various reasons, including hormonal changes, ovulation, or the onset of menstruation. The presence of brown discharge, especially if it occurs just a few days before your expected period, is usually a sign that your menstrual cycle is progressing normally.
The slight spotting you mentioned, with a bit of blood on the toilet paper, could also be related to the same hormonal fluctuations that occur in the luteal phase of your cycle. This phase follows ovulation and leads up to menstruation. If you are experiencing this spotting consistently and it is not accompanied by pain or other concerning symptoms, it is likely normal. However, if you notice any significant changes in your cycle or if the spotting becomes heavy or painful, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.
Regarding the use of birth control pills, such as Yaz (which you mentioned), it is generally safe to start taking them even if you are experiencing brown discharge or light spotting. Birth control pills work by regulating hormones and can help to stabilize your menstrual cycle over time. If you begin taking the pill while experiencing these symptoms, it may help to alleviate any irregularities in your cycle in the future.
However, it is important to note that if you start taking birth control pills while you are already experiencing your period, you may need to use additional contraception for the first seven days to ensure effectiveness. If you are unsure about when to start taking the pill or have any concerns about your symptoms, it is always best to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.
In summary, brown discharge and light spotting before your period can be normal, especially if they are not accompanied by other symptoms. Starting birth control pills like Yaz can be done during this time, but be sure to follow the instructions regarding additional contraceptive measures if necessary. If you have any ongoing concerns or if your symptoms change, don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
