Brown discharge after menstruation?
Hello Doctor: I had my period six days after taking the emergency contraceptive pill, and it lasted for six days.
Today is the seventh day, and I am experiencing a small amount of brown discharge.
What could be the reason for this? Is it a side effect of the emergency contraceptive pill, implantation bleeding, or could there be another reason? Thank you very much for your response!
Xin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/08/12
Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
The response you provided typically describes the side effects of emergency contraceptive pills.
If pregnancy has occurred, there generally should not be any bleeding; if there is bleeding, it is usually minimal.
Emergency contraceptive pills can often disrupt the stability of hormones in the body, leading to irregular menstrual bleeding.
Based on your description, it seems more like irregular bleeding.
If the bleeding is excessive or lasts too long, it is advisable to seek medical treatment.
If you are still concerned about pregnancy, you can purchase a home pregnancy test.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Brown discharge after menstruation can be a common occurrence and may arise from several factors. In your case, since you mentioned that you recently took emergency contraception (the "morning-after pill"), it is essential to consider how this medication can affect your menstrual cycle.
Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) contain hormones that can alter your menstrual cycle. After taking ECPs, some women experience changes in their menstrual flow, including spotting or brown discharge. This brown discharge is typically old blood that is being expelled from the body, which can happen as your uterus sheds its lining. It is not uncommon for women to notice this type of discharge after their period, especially if they have taken hormonal medications recently.
The timing of your brown discharge, occurring on the seventh day after your period started, could be attributed to several factors:
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: ECPs can cause hormonal fluctuations that may lead to irregular bleeding or spotting. This is often a side effect of the hormones in the pill, which can disrupt your normal menstrual cycle.
2. Ovulation: Depending on where you are in your cycle, the brown discharge could also be related to ovulation. Some women experience spotting around the time of ovulation, which can sometimes appear brown.
3. Implantation Bleeding: If there is a chance of pregnancy, brown discharge could also be a sign of implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. However, this typically occurs about a week to ten days after conception, so it may be a consideration if you had unprotected intercourse around the time of ovulation.
4. Other Causes: Other factors that can lead to brown discharge include infections, polyps, or fibroids. If the discharge is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, itching, or a foul odor, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider.
In summary, the brown discharge you are experiencing could be a result of the hormonal changes induced by the emergency contraceptive pill, or it could be related to other factors in your menstrual cycle. If the discharge persists, becomes heavier, or is accompanied by any concerning symptoms, it is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any underlying conditions. Always keep track of your menstrual cycle and any changes you notice, as this information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in assessing your situation.
