Postoperative care for anal abscess?
Hello, doctor.
I had an anal abscess drainage surgery about two weeks ago, and I've been doing sitz baths since then.
For the past couple of days, I've been feeling a foreign body sensation around the anus, and there's some itching.
Is this normal? Additionally, I noticed a blue thread at the wound site when I looked in the mirror; it should be a suture, right? It's been over two weeks, and it hasn't fallen off or been absorbed yet.
Is this normal? Will it affect the healing process? Also, there is a small red, soft lump near the wound, about the size of a red bean.
I'm not sure what that is.
Could you please provide some answers? Thank you!

Anal abscess drainage surgery often involves the use of sutures, and the absorption rate varies depending on the type of sutures used; some may take up to a month.
This is generally not a concern, but if you are worried, you can consult your physician for an evaluation.
As for the small tissue growths near the wound, they are likely granulation tissue resulting from incomplete healing of the wound, and there is no need for excessive concern.
They will disappear once the wound has fully healed.

After undergoing an anal abscess drainage surgery, it is not uncommon to experience various symptoms during the recovery period. Your concerns regarding the sensation of a foreign body, itching, and the presence of blue threads (likely sutures) are valid and warrant further discussion.
Firstly, the feeling of a foreign body or discomfort in the anal area can be attributed to several factors. After surgery, the tissues in the area are healing, and it is normal to experience some irritation or sensitivity as the body recovers. The sensation of itching can also be a part of the healing process, as the nerves in the area may be more sensitive during recovery. However, if the itching is accompanied by significant pain, increased redness, or discharge, it could indicate an infection or other complications that would require medical attention.
Regarding the blue threads you observed, these are likely absorbable sutures used to close the incision. It is normal for absorbable sutures to remain in place for several weeks, and they typically dissolve on their own over time. The duration for which these sutures remain can vary based on the type of material used and the individual’s healing process. If they have not dissolved after a month, it is generally not a cause for concern unless you notice signs of infection or if the sutures seem to be causing irritation.
The additional red, soft lump you mentioned near the wound site could be a few things. It might be a granulation tissue, which is a normal part of the healing process. Granulation tissue is a type of new connective tissue and microscopic blood vessels that form on the surface of a wound during the healing process. It is usually soft and can appear red or pink. However, if this lump is painful, growing, or changing in appearance, it is essential to have it evaluated by your healthcare provider.
In summary, while some discomfort, itching, and the presence of sutures or soft tissue are typical after an anal abscess drainage surgery, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms. If you experience increased pain, signs of infection (such as fever, increased redness, or discharge), or if the lump changes in size or character, you should contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Regular follow-up appointments are essential to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns that may arise during your recovery. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team to ensure a smooth recovery process.
