Pregnancy test
I would like to ask, my expected menstrual date was July 31, but my period did not come, and I had brown discharge.
I went to see a doctor, who prescribed medication for me, and my period started on August 7.
I had a blood test for pregnancy on August 9, which was 21 days after my last sexual intercourse (July 19), and a urine pregnancy test on August 23, which was 35 days after.
Both tests showed negative results.
Are these two pregnancy test results 100% accurate? My period (on August 7) did come, but the flow was lighter than usual, so I am concerned that it might not be a true menstrual period.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the questioner: Vaginal bleeding is not always indicative of menstruation; some individuals may mistake early pregnancy bleeding for their period.
If you are unsure whether the bleeding on the 8th or 7th is a true menstrual period or if you are concerned that subjective symptoms may indicate pregnancy, it is advisable to consult a physician for ultrasound, urine, and blood tests to confirm whether or not you are pregnant.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

When it comes to understanding pregnancy tests and menstrual concerns, it's essential to consider several factors that can influence the accuracy of the tests and the nature of menstrual bleeding. Based on your timeline, you experienced a missed period on July 31, followed by a visit to the doctor, who prescribed medication. Your period arrived on August 7, but you noted that the flow was lighter than usual. You subsequently took a blood test on August 9 and a urine test on August 23, both of which returned negative results for pregnancy.
Firstly, let's address the accuracy of pregnancy tests. Blood tests (beta-hCG tests) are generally more sensitive and accurate than urine tests. A blood test can detect pregnancy as early as 6-8 days after ovulation, while urine tests are typically reliable about a week after a missed period. Given that you took the blood test 21 days after your last sexual encounter, it should provide a reliable indication of whether you were pregnant at that time. The urine test taken 35 days after the last sexual encounter also supports this, as it is well past the time when a pregnancy would typically be detectable.
However, the presence of light bleeding can sometimes lead to confusion. It is possible for some women to experience what is known as "implantation bleeding," which can occur when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This bleeding is usually lighter and shorter than a regular period. However, since you had a confirmed negative pregnancy test and your period arrived, it is more likely that what you experienced was indeed your menstrual cycle, albeit lighter than usual.
There are several reasons why your menstrual flow might be lighter than normal. Stress, hormonal fluctuations, changes in weight, or even the medication prescribed by your doctor could all contribute to variations in menstrual bleeding. If the bleeding was significantly lighter and different from your usual pattern, it might be worth discussing with your healthcare provider to rule out any underlying issues.
In summary, based on the information provided, the results of both the blood and urine tests are likely accurate, indicating that you are not pregnant. The light bleeding you experienced on August 7 is likely your period, but if you have ongoing concerns about your menstrual cycle or any unusual symptoms, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can provide personalized advice and may suggest additional tests if necessary to ensure your reproductive health is in good standing.
