Issues related to the use of RU486?
Hello doctor, I used RU486 without taking any other medications.
It has been about two weeks since I took it, and I am three months pregnant.
I still have significant abdominal pain, there is blood when I go to the bathroom along with some blood clots, and I feel very sleepy.
I am also experiencing dizziness, a burning sensation in my body, and constant fatigue.
Is there a problem, or could there be any serious implications?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the general recommendation is not to use medication for abortion if the gestational age is greater than 7 weeks.
If you are still pregnant or have taken RU486 without follow-up, please schedule an appointment to check the status of the fetus or uterus.
If it is confirmed that the pregnancy has been completely terminated, it is advisable to have a doctor check for any inflammation or other issues.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health, Dr.
Zhang.

More Info
After taking RU486 (Mifepristone), it is common to experience a range of side effects, especially in the first few days following administration. RU486 is used for medical abortion and works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for pregnancy to continue. It is typically followed by a second medication, Misoprostol, which induces contractions to help expel the pregnancy tissue.
In your case, you mentioned experiencing significant abdominal pain, bleeding with blood clots, fatigue, dizziness, and a general feeling of being unwell. These symptoms can be concerning, and it is essential to understand what they may indicate.
1. Abdominal Pain and Bleeding: It is normal to experience cramping and bleeding after taking RU486, as the body is expelling the pregnancy tissue. However, if the bleeding is heavy (soaking through a pad in an hour or less), or if you are passing large clots (larger than a golf ball), you should seek medical attention immediately. Persistent or severe abdominal pain can also indicate complications such as incomplete abortion or infection.
2. Fatigue and Dizziness: Feeling fatigued and dizzy can be attributed to several factors. Blood loss from heavy bleeding can lead to anemia, which may cause fatigue and dizziness. Additionally, hormonal changes and the physical stress of the abortion process can contribute to these feelings. If these symptoms are severe or worsening, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider.
3. Fever and General Malaise: You mentioned feeling "burning" and generally unwell. If you develop a fever (temperature over 100.4°F or 38°C), this could indicate an infection, which is a serious complication that requires immediate medical evaluation.
4. Emotional and Psychological Effects: It is also important to acknowledge the emotional and psychological impact of undergoing a medical abortion. Feelings of sadness, anxiety, or emotional distress are common and should be addressed. Support from friends, family, or mental health professionals can be beneficial.
5. Follow-Up Care: After taking RU486, follow-up care is crucial. It is typically recommended to have a follow-up appointment with your healthcare provider within a week or two to ensure that the abortion was complete and to check for any complications. During this visit, your provider can assess your symptoms and provide guidance on managing any side effects.
6. Diet and Lifestyle Considerations: While recovering, it is advisable to maintain a balanced diet rich in iron (to combat potential anemia), stay hydrated, and get plenty of rest. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting until you feel better.
In summary, while some discomfort and symptoms are expected after taking RU486, it is essential to monitor your condition closely. If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, or any other concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical attention. Your health and well-being are paramount, and a healthcare provider can offer the necessary support and treatment.
