Pressure on the eyeball?
Recently, I have been feeling eye fatigue due to frequent computer use.
I have been massaging my eyes to relieve the discomfort, but I suddenly noticed that the area above my right eyeball feels sore, as if it has been overworked.
After a few days without massaging, it has improved a bit.
What could be the issue? Should I make an appointment with an ophthalmologist?

Dear Concerned Student,
Hello: When massaging your eyes, please press around the eye socket and avoid direct pressure on the eyeball.
Your condition is likely reversible and may simply be due to eye fatigue, so resting should help.
If the issue persists, you should visit an ophthalmologist for an examination.
Taiwan E-Hospital Puzi Hospital Ophthalmology: Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
We hope to have the opportunity to serve you.
Sincerely,
Gao Pilin

Eye strain, also known as asthenopia, is a common condition that many people experience, especially with the increased use of digital devices. Symptoms can include discomfort, fatigue, and pain in or around the eyes, as well as headaches. The discomfort you are feeling in your right eye, described as a sensation similar to overexertion, could be attributed to several factors, including prolonged screen time, improper lighting, or even an uncorrected vision problem.
When you spend extended periods looking at a computer screen, your eyes are required to focus continuously, which can lead to fatigue. This is exacerbated if you are not taking regular breaks or if your workspace is not ergonomically set up. The muscles around your eyes can become strained, leading to discomfort or pain, particularly if you are also experiencing dry eyes, which is common among those who frequently use screens.
The fact that you noticed improvement after a few days of not massaging your eye suggests that the pain may be related to muscle strain or tension rather than a more serious underlying condition. However, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as vision changes, redness, or swelling, it would be prudent to seek an evaluation from an eye care professional.
In general, here are some guidelines on when to seek help for eye pain or discomfort:
1. Persistent Pain: If the discomfort lasts more than a few days or keeps recurring, it’s advisable to consult an eye doctor.
2. Vision Changes: Any sudden changes in vision, such as blurriness, double vision, or loss of vision, warrant immediate medical attention.
3. Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience other symptoms like redness, swelling, discharge, or sensitivity to light, these could indicate an infection or other eye condition that requires treatment.
4. History of Eye Problems: If you have a history of eye conditions or have had recent eye injuries, it’s best to get checked out.
5. Impact on Daily Activities: If the pain interferes with your daily activities, work, or quality of life, it’s time to seek help.
To alleviate eye strain, consider implementing the following practices:
- Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This helps relax the eye muscles.
- Adjust Your Workspace: Ensure your computer screen is at eye level and about an arm's length away. Use proper lighting to reduce glare.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body and eyes hydrated.
- Use Artificial Tears: If you experience dryness, over-the-counter artificial tears can help lubricate your eyes.
- Regular Eye Exams: Regular check-ups with an optometrist or ophthalmologist can help identify any underlying vision issues that may contribute to eye strain.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to eye strain from prolonged computer use, it’s essential to remain vigilant. If the discomfort continues or worsens, seeking professional advice is the best course of action to ensure your eye health is maintained.
