Pregnancy Symptoms After Taking Menstrual Induction Injection - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Possible pregnancy

My last menstrual period started on August 3, with an average cycle of about 25-27 days.
I had sexual intercourse on August 11, August 26, and September 1, using condoms throughout.
On September 6, I took a home pregnancy test that showed one line, and when I went to the hospital for a pregnancy test and ultrasound, it also confirmed that I was not pregnant.
Therefore, I received a medication to induce my period.
In the past few days, I have been experiencing abdominal pain and unusual fatigue.
Could this be due to the medication to induce my period, or is it possible that these are symptoms of pregnancy?

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Using condoms throughout intercourse significantly reduces the likelihood of pregnancy.
Abdominal pain and fatigue may be side effects of the menstrual induction injection.
If you have received the menstrual induction injection and your period still does not arrive, it is necessary to reconsider the possibility of pregnancy.

When it comes to understanding pregnancy symptoms after taking a menstrual induction injection, it's important to consider several factors. Based on your timeline, you had your last menstrual period on August 3rd, and you engaged in sexual activity with protection on several occasions. After testing negative for pregnancy both at home and in the hospital, you received a menstrual induction injection.
The symptoms you are experiencing, such as abdominal pain and unusual fatigue, can indeed be related to the menstrual induction injection. These injections often contain hormones that can cause various side effects as your body adjusts to the hormonal changes. Common side effects of such injections include cramping, bloating, fatigue, and mood swings. These symptoms can mimic early pregnancy signs, which can understandably lead to confusion.

It is also essential to note that the menstrual induction injection is designed to stimulate your body to shed the uterine lining, which can lead to cramping and discomfort similar to menstrual cramps. The abdominal pain you are feeling could be a result of your body responding to the injection, as it prepares for menstruation.
As for the possibility of being pregnant despite the negative tests, it is generally unlikely, especially since you have received a medical evaluation confirming that you are not pregnant. However, it is worth noting that some women may experience very early pregnancy symptoms that can be confused with side effects from hormonal treatments. If you were to conceive around the time of your last menstrual period, it would be too early for standard pregnancy tests to detect the hormone hCG reliably.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you have any concerns about your health, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can provide further evaluation and guidance based on your specific situation. Additionally, if you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or any other concerning symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

In summary, the abdominal pain and fatigue you are experiencing are likely side effects of the menstrual induction injection rather than signs of pregnancy. However, if you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, consulting with your healthcare provider is the best course of action. They can offer personalized advice and reassurance based on your medical history and current condition.
