Wrist rotation pain
A few months ago, I injured my wrist while playing basketball when it was pulled in the opposite direction.
It was very painful at first, but it got better afterward, and everything seemed normal for a few months.
Recently, over the past month, I experienced a mild sprain in my wrist while doing weight training with dumbbells that were too heavy.
After applying a medicated patch and undergoing acupuncture a few times, I generally feel okay, except for some weakness in my wrist.
However, I experience pain when rotating my wrist, specifically on the outer side beneath the protruding bone.
I would like to know which part of my wrist might be injured.
Should I see an orthopedic specialist nearby?

It is advisable to see an orthopedic specialist to check for any other issues, as it is likely that the ligaments near the wrist are injured.

Wrist pain during rotation can be a common issue, especially for individuals who engage in activities that put stress on the wrist, such as basketball or weight training. Based on your description, it seems that you may have sustained an injury to the wrist that could involve the ligaments, tendons, or even the joint itself.
When you mentioned that you experienced a sudden pain while playing basketball, it suggests a possible acute injury, such as a sprain or strain. The fact that you felt better after some time indicates that it might have been a minor injury. However, the recent onset of pain during rotation, especially after lifting heavy weights, raises concerns about a potential exacerbation of the initial injury or a new injury altogether.
The location of your pain, specifically on the outer side of the wrist near the bony prominence (likely the styloid process of the radius), could indicate several possibilities:
1. Wrist Sprain: This is a common injury where the ligaments that support the wrist are stretched or torn. Sprains can occur from sudden twisting motions or excessive force, such as lifting heavy weights.
2. TFCC Injury: The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is a structure in the wrist that provides cushioning and stability. Injuries to the TFCC can cause pain on the outer side of the wrist, particularly during rotation or gripping activities.
3. Tendonitis: Overuse of the wrist, especially with activities like weightlifting, can lead to tendonitis, where the tendons around the wrist become inflamed. This can cause pain during movement, particularly when rotating the wrist.
4. Wrist Fracture: Although you mentioned that the pain subsided after the initial injury, it's still possible that a fracture could have occurred, especially if there was significant force involved. Fractures can sometimes be subtle and may not present with immediate, severe symptoms.
Given that you are experiencing persistent pain during wrist rotation and a feeling of weakness, it is advisable to consult an orthopedic specialist. An orthopedic doctor can perform a thorough examination, which may include physical assessments and imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI, to determine the exact nature of your injury.
In the meantime, here are some recommendations to manage your symptoms:
- Rest: Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain, especially heavy lifting or repetitive wrist movements.
- Ice: Apply ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes several times a day to reduce swelling and pain.
- Compression: Use a wrist brace or wrap to provide support and limit movement.
- Elevation: Keep your wrist elevated to help reduce swelling.
- Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage pain and inflammation.
If your symptoms do not improve with conservative measures or if they worsen, seeking medical attention is crucial. Early intervention can prevent further complications and promote a quicker recovery. An orthopedic specialist will be able to provide a tailored treatment plan based on the specific diagnosis, which may include physical therapy, medication, or in some cases, surgical intervention if necessary.
