Wrist pain
Hello, doctor.
About a year ago, I worked at a beverage shop where I shook countless cups of drinks every day.
Since then, I have frequently experienced pain in my wrist, but recently the pain has become more frequent.
Whenever I rotate my wrist, it often makes noise accompanied by pain, and I also feel a tight sensation in my wrist.

More Info
Wrist pain can be a common issue, especially for individuals who engage in repetitive motions, such as shaking drinks or typing for extended periods. Given your history of working in a beverage shop and the symptoms you are experiencing, it is possible that you may be dealing with a condition related to overuse or strain of the wrist.
Causes of Wrist Pain
1. Tendinitis: This is inflammation of the tendons in the wrist, often caused by repetitive motions. In your case, the repetitive action of shaking drinks could have led to tendinitis, particularly in the wrist flexors or extensors.
2. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This condition occurs when the median nerve, which runs through the wrist, becomes compressed. Symptoms include pain, tingling, and weakness in the hand and wrist. If you notice symptoms radiating into your fingers, this could be a possibility.
3. Wrist Sprains: If you have ever twisted your wrist or fallen on it, you may have a sprain, which can cause pain, swelling, and limited movement.
4. De Quervain's Tenosynovitis: This is a specific type of tendinitis affecting the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. It can cause pain and swelling near the base of the thumb and may be exacerbated by repetitive wrist movements.
5. Osteoarthritis: This degenerative joint disease can develop over time, particularly if there has been previous injury or overuse. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, and a grating sensation in the joint.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Pain: This can range from a dull ache to sharp pain, especially during movement.
- Swelling: Noticeable swelling around the wrist joint.
- Stiffness: Difficulty in moving the wrist, particularly in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
- Clicking or Popping Sounds: These sounds during movement can indicate issues with the tendons or cartilage in the wrist.
- Weakness: Difficulty gripping objects or performing tasks that require wrist strength.
Treatment Options
1. Rest: Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain. Giving your wrist time to heal is crucial.
2. Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce swelling and numb the pain. Aim for 15-20 minutes every few hours.
3. Compression: Using a wrist brace or wrap can provide support and reduce swelling.
4. Elevation: Keeping your wrist elevated can help decrease swelling.
5. Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can provide exercises to strengthen the wrist and improve flexibility. They may also use modalities such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation.
6. Medications: Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or naproxen can help reduce pain and swelling.
7. Corticosteroid Injections: If conservative treatments fail, your doctor may recommend injections to reduce inflammation.
8. Surgery: In severe cases, such as significant tendon damage or carpal tunnel syndrome, surgical intervention may be necessary.
When to See a Doctor
If your symptoms persist despite home treatment, or if you experience severe pain, swelling, or numbness, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays or MRI, to assess the extent of any damage and to rule out fractures or other serious conditions.
In summary, wrist pain can arise from various causes, particularly in individuals engaged in repetitive tasks. Understanding the symptoms and treatment options available can help you manage your condition effectively. If your pain continues or worsens, seeking professional medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
