Red scars that do not fade after laser resurfacing?
I went to a dermatologist for laser resurfacing to treat chickenpox scars that have been present for over 10 years.
However, after a year post-laser treatment, the red laser scars have not faded.
The treatment area is next to the bridge of my nose.
Please advise on how to reduce these scars.
Thank you.

More Info
Persistent red scars after laser resurfacing can be a frustrating issue, especially when you have been dealing with scars for over a decade. Laser treatments, including laser resurfacing, are often employed to improve the appearance of scars, but results can vary significantly from person to person. Here’s a comprehensive overview of potential solutions and insights regarding your situation.
Understanding the Cause of Persistent Red Scars
After laser resurfacing, it is common for the treated area to exhibit redness as part of the healing process. This redness can be attributed to several factors, including inflammation, increased blood flow to the area, and the body’s natural healing response. In some cases, the redness may persist for an extended period, leading to concerns about the effectiveness of the treatment.
Treatment Options for Persistent Red Scars
1. Topical Treatments:
- Silicone Gel Sheets: These are often recommended for scar management. They can help flatten and reduce the redness of scars over time.
- Hydrating Creams: Keeping the scar moisturized can aid in the healing process. Look for creams that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
- Topical Retinoids: Products containing retinoids can promote cell turnover and improve skin texture, potentially reducing the appearance of redness.
2. Laser Treatments:
- Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL): This type of laser specifically targets blood vessels and can effectively reduce redness in scars. It works by selectively destroying the blood vessels that contribute to the red appearance of the scar.
- Fractional Laser Resurfacing: If the redness persists, fractional lasers can be used to improve skin texture and color. This method promotes collagen production and can help in fading the redness over time.
3. Chemical Peels: Mild chemical peels can help exfoliate the skin and promote new skin growth, which may assist in reducing the appearance of red scars.
4. Microneedling: This technique involves using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, which can stimulate collagen production and improve the overall appearance of scars.
5. Injections: In some cases, corticosteroid injections can be used to reduce inflammation and redness in scars.
Additional Considerations
- Sun Protection: After any laser treatment, protecting your skin from the sun is crucial. UV exposure can exacerbate redness and hinder the healing process. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply it regularly.
- Consultation with a Dermatologist: Since you have been experiencing persistent redness for over a year, it is essential to consult with your dermatologist. They can evaluate your specific situation and recommend a tailored treatment plan. They may also consider factors such as your skin type, the nature of the scar, and any previous treatments you have undergone.
- Patience and Realistic Expectations: Healing from laser treatments can take time, and results may not be immediate. It is essential to have realistic expectations and understand that multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired outcome.
Conclusion
Persistent red scars after laser resurfacing can be addressed through a combination of topical treatments, additional laser therapies, and proper skincare practices. Consulting with a qualified dermatologist is crucial to determine the most effective treatment plan tailored to your needs. Remember, patience is key, as scar healing can be a gradual process. With the right approach, you can significantly improve the appearance of your scars and regain confidence in your skin.
