Is there a possibility of pregnancy?

Hello doctor, I had my period on August 18th, and I had sexual intercourse on September 4th and September 11th.
I did not use a condom during the earlier part of the month, but ejaculation occurred inside the condom.
I took a pregnancy test today, and there are no signs of pregnancy.
Is there still a possibility of becoming pregnant?

Lisa, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/09/17

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Due to the incomplete use of condoms, there is still a slight possibility of pregnancy.
Since the last sexual intercourse was on September 11, which was only seven days ago, it may be too early to take a pregnancy test, and it might not show accurate results yet.
It is recommended to wait another week and then take the test again.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to the possibility of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, several factors need to be considered. Based on your timeline, you had your last menstrual period on August 18, and you engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse on September 4 and September 11. Understanding the menstrual cycle is crucial in assessing the likelihood of pregnancy.

The average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person. Ovulation typically occurs around 14 days before the start of the next period. If we assume your cycle is around 28 days, ovulation would likely occur around September 1. Engaging in unprotected intercourse on September 4 and September 11 could potentially lead to pregnancy, as sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days. Therefore, if you ovulated around September 1, intercourse on September 4 would be within the fertile window.

However, you mentioned that you took a pregnancy test and it came back negative. Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when taken after a missed period, which is typically about a week after ovulation. If you tested too early, it may not have detected the pregnancy hormone (hCG) yet, especially if implantation occurred later than expected.

In your case, since you had intercourse after your presumed ovulation date, there is still a chance of pregnancy, albeit it may be lower if you tested too early. If your menstrual cycle is irregular or longer than 28 days, it could affect your ovulation timing, making it more challenging to predict your fertile window accurately.

If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider the following steps:
1. Wait a Few Days: If your period is late, wait a few days and take another pregnancy test. This will give your body more time to produce hCG if you are pregnant.

2. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If you continue to have negative tests but do not get your period, it may be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test, which is more sensitive than home tests and can detect pregnancy earlier.

3. Consider Emergency Contraception: If you are worried about the risk of pregnancy from unprotected intercourse, and it has been within 72-120 hours, you might consider emergency contraception, which can help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.

4. Monitor Your Cycle: Keep track of your menstrual cycle, noting any irregularities. This can help you better understand your ovulation patterns and fertility in the future.

In summary, while there is a chance of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, the negative pregnancy test suggests that it may be less likely. However, if your period does not arrive as expected, retesting or consulting with a healthcare provider is advisable. Understanding your cycle and ovulation can significantly help in family planning and managing reproductive health.
