Am I at Risk of Pregnancy After Recent Abortion and Unprotected Sex? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Can I get pregnant?

Last month I had an abortion.
I took the first pill on August 21 and the contraction medication on August 23.
I started bleeding on August 19 after having intercourse with my boyfriend, who did not use a condom and ejaculated inside.
The doctor said my period would come at the end of September, and the 19th should be a safe period, so what is the likelihood of getting pregnant? Since it has been over 24 hours, I am struggling with whether to take emergency contraception, especially since I just had an abortion last month.

In response to your question, you mentioned taking medication on August 21.
Was this an abortion pill? If so, the sexual activity on August 19 is not significant, as you have already taken the abortion pill on August 21, which would have terminated the pregnancy.
You are unlikely to become pregnant again in the short term.
Sincerely, Dr.

After a recent abortion, it is understandable to have concerns about the risks associated with becoming pregnant again, especially after having unprotected sex. The situation you described raises several important points regarding your reproductive health and the potential risks involved.

Firstly, it is crucial to understand that after an abortion, your body goes through a recovery process. This includes the healing of the uterine lining and the normalization of your menstrual cycle. Typically, it can take a few weeks for your body to return to its pre-pregnancy state. In many cases, ovulation can occur as soon as two weeks after an abortion, which means that it is possible to conceive shortly after the procedure, even if you believe you are in a "safe" period.
In your case, since you had unprotected intercourse shortly after your abortion, there is a possibility of pregnancy. The timing of your ovulation is key here. If you ovulated shortly after your abortion, the chances of conception would be higher. It is important to note that the "safe period" method of contraception is not always reliable, as it depends on the regularity of your menstrual cycle, which may still be irregular following an abortion.

Regarding the use of emergency contraception, it is generally recommended to take it as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) are most effective when taken within 72 hours but can work up to 5 days after unprotected sex. Given that you are feeling conflicted about taking emergency contraception after your recent abortion, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.

Additionally, it is essential to consider the emotional and physical aspects of your recent abortion. Many women experience a range of emotions after an abortion, and it is important to give yourself time to heal both physically and emotionally before considering another pregnancy. If you are feeling uncertain or anxious about the possibility of becoming pregnant again, it may be helpful to speak with a counselor or therapist who specializes in reproductive health.

In conclusion, while there is a risk of pregnancy after a recent abortion and unprotected sex, the actual likelihood depends on various factors, including the timing of ovulation and your menstrual cycle's regularity. It is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider regarding your concerns about pregnancy and the use of emergency contraception. They can help you navigate this situation and provide guidance tailored to your specific needs. Remember to prioritize your health and well-being during this time.

Hello, Dr. Lu! I would like to ask you about my girlfriend. She had an abortion on the 15th, and we had sexual intercourse on the 29th, with brief vaginal penetration followed by ejaculation outside. Is this risky?

It is unlikely that ovulation will resume that quickly, and pregnancy is not very probable at this time. However, it is not absolutely impossible. If menstruation is significantly delayed, it is still advisable to take a pregnancy test. Regards, Lu Lizheng.
