Nasal septum surgery issues!
Hello, doctor! I have severe allergic rhinitis with post-nasal drip.
I would like to know if a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates can affect blood circulation and the neck? I often feel pressure in my eyes, and the right side of my neck is swollen.
Will a septoplasty cause my nose to appear flattened?
WON, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/09/23
Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello Won:
Nasal septum deviation and turbinate hypertrophy primarily lead to nasal congestion, which can cause drowsiness or poor sleep quality, subsequently resulting in symptoms such as shoulder and neck muscle pain.
If long-term nasal congestion does not respond well to medication, surgical intervention may be considered for improvement.
Generally, surgery will not cause the nose to become sunken.
Wishing you safety and health,
Dr.

More Info
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated septum, which is the cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity into two nostrils. When the septum is deviated, it can lead to various complications, including chronic nasal obstruction, difficulty breathing, and increased susceptibility to allergies and sinus infections. In your case, you mentioned having severe allergic rhinitis and post-nasal drip, which can indeed be exacerbated by a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates (the structures in the nasal cavity that help filter and humidify the air).
Impact on Blood Circulation and Neck Symptoms
While a deviated septum primarily affects the nasal passages, it can indirectly influence other areas of the body, including the neck. Chronic nasal obstruction can lead to mouth breathing, which may cause changes in posture and muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. This can result in discomfort or pain in the neck area, as well as feelings of pressure or swelling. Additionally, the inflammation associated with allergies can contribute to sinus pressure, which may manifest as headaches or a sensation of fullness in the face and neck.
The symptoms you describe, such as feeling that your eyes are swollen and experiencing swelling on the right side of your neck, could be related to sinus congestion or inflammation. Allergies can lead to the production of excess mucus, which may drain improperly, causing discomfort and swelling in adjacent areas. However, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out other potential causes of these symptoms, such as lymphadenopathy or other underlying conditions.
Concerns About Septoplasty and Nasal Appearance
Regarding your concern about whether septoplasty will make your nose appear "flat," it is essential to understand that the primary goal of the surgery is to improve airflow and alleviate symptoms associated with nasal obstruction. In most cases, septoplasty does not significantly alter the external appearance of the nose. However, if the deviation is severe, there may be some changes in the nasal structure post-surgery. It is crucial to have a thorough discussion with your surgeon about your concerns and expectations. They can provide you with a detailed explanation of the procedure and its potential effects on both function and appearance.
Conclusion
In summary, a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates can significantly impact your quality of life, particularly if you suffer from allergies. The relationship between nasal obstruction and neck symptoms is complex, as chronic nasal issues can lead to compensatory behaviors that affect posture and muscle tension. Septoplasty can be an effective solution for improving nasal airflow and reducing allergy-related symptoms, but it is essential to have realistic expectations regarding the surgical outcomes. Always consult with an ENT specialist who can provide personalized advice based on your specific condition and health history.
