Preoperative secretions
Hello doctor, I have been consistently taking the oral contraceptive pill for 15 days without missing any doses.
As I approach my ovulation period, I understand that the medication may suppress ovulation.
Will I still experience the egg white cervical mucus or an increase in discharge that typically occurs around ovulation? Recently, I have noticed a slight increase in clear, odorless discharge over the past two days, resembling the type of discharge I usually have before ovulation, but the amount is not as much as during previous ovulation periods.
Is it normal to have an increase in discharge near the ovulation period while on the pill? If this phenomenon is normal, does that mean that even with increased discharge, ovulation will not occur?

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
If you consistently take oral contraceptives, ovulation will be suppressed, and there should not be an increase in discharge.
You can monitor the situation; however, if the discharge continues to increase, has an unusual odor, changes color, or causes pain or itching, it may indicate inflammation, and you should seek medical attention.
Sincerely, Dr.

When taking birth control pills, understanding the changes in cervical mucus is essential for recognizing how these hormonal contraceptives affect your menstrual cycle and reproductive health. Birth control pills primarily work by preventing ovulation, which means that the ovaries do not release eggs. This is achieved through the regulation of hormones such as estrogen and progestin, which alter the natural hormonal fluctuations that occur during a typical menstrual cycle.
Cervical mucus plays a crucial role in fertility. During the menstrual cycle, particularly around ovulation, cervical mucus changes in consistency and volume. It typically becomes clear, stretchy, and resembles raw egg whites, which facilitates sperm movement through the cervix and into the uterus. However, when you are on birth control pills, the hormonal changes induced by the medication can significantly alter these patterns.
In your case, you mentioned that you have been consistently taking the birth control pill for 15 days and are approaching what would typically be your ovulation period. Despite the pills preventing ovulation, it is not uncommon to experience some changes in cervical mucus. The presence of clear, odorless discharge that you are noticing could be a result of the hormonal influence of the birth control pills. While the volume may not be as significant as during a natural ovulation cycle, some women still report experiencing changes in cervical mucus even when they are on hormonal contraceptives.
The key point to understand is that while you may observe an increase in cervical mucus, this does not indicate that ovulation is occurring. The hormonal environment created by the birth control pills suppresses the natural ovulatory process, meaning that even if you notice changes in mucus, your ovaries are not releasing an egg. Therefore, the increase in cervical mucus can be considered a normal response to the hormonal fluctuations induced by the pill, but it does not signify fertility or ovulation.
It's also worth noting that individual responses to birth control pills can vary. Some women may experience more noticeable changes in cervical mucus, while others may have little to no change. This variability is influenced by factors such as the type of birth control pill, individual hormonal responses, and overall health.
In summary, it is entirely normal to experience changes in cervical mucus while on birth control pills, even as you approach what would typically be your ovulation period. However, rest assured that these changes do not indicate that ovulation is occurring, as the primary function of the pill is to prevent ovulation. If you have any concerns or experience unusual symptoms, it is always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance.
