There is a popping sound in the ear?
Hello Doctor: I have been troubled by a recent issue.
When I lie down and turn my head to the right, I hear a continuous "popping" sound in my left ear.
When I try turning my head to the left, there is no sound in my right ear at all.
This only occurs when I am lying down; I do not experience this sound when I am standing or sitting and turning to the right.
This problem has been ongoing for quite some time, and I hope you can help me with some advice.
Thank you!
Lü Chá, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/18
Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello: Currently, it is uncertain whether the sound produced when turning the head is due to the presence of fine earwax on the eardrum.
It is recommended that if there is no significant improvement, you should seek medical attention for a definitive diagnosis.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
The persistent popping sound in your ear when lying down, particularly when turning your head to the right, can be quite bothersome and may stem from several underlying causes. Given your description, it seems that this phenomenon is positional and occurs specifically when you are in a reclined position. Here are some potential causes and solutions based on medical knowledge:
Possible Causes
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and helps equalize pressure in the ear. When you lie down or turn your head, the position may affect how well this tube functions. If it is not opening properly, it can lead to a sensation of fullness or popping sounds.
2. Middle Ear Pressure Changes: Changes in body position can affect the pressure in the middle ear. When you lie down, especially if you turn your head, it may create a vacuum or pressure difference that results in popping sounds.
3. Inner Ear Issues: Conditions such as vestibular disorders can cause abnormal sensations in the ear, including popping or clicking sounds. This is often accompanied by balance issues or dizziness.
4. Muscle Spasms: Sometimes, the muscles around the ear can spasm, leading to unusual sounds. This can be exacerbated by stress or fatigue.
5. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction: The TMJ is located near the ear, and issues with this joint can lead to sounds in the ear, especially when moving the jaw or changing head positions.
Recommended Solutions
1. Eustachian Tube Exercises: You can try performing maneuvers to help open the Eustachian tube, such as the Valsalva maneuver (pinching your nose and gently blowing) or the Toynbee maneuver (swallowing while pinching your nose).
2. Stay Hydrated: Keeping well-hydrated can help maintain mucus membranes, which may assist in Eustachian tube function.
3. Avoid Allergens: If you have allergies, managing them with antihistamines or nasal sprays can help reduce inflammation and improve Eustachian tube function.
4. Posture Awareness: Be mindful of your head and neck posture when lying down. Using a supportive pillow that keeps your neck aligned may help alleviate some pressure.
5. Consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist: Since this issue has persisted for a while, it would be wise to consult an ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including hearing tests and possibly imaging studies, to rule out any serious conditions.
6. Physical Therapy: If the issue is related to TMJ dysfunction or vestibular problems, physical therapy may be beneficial. A therapist can provide exercises to improve jaw alignment and balance.
7. Stress Management: If muscle tension is contributing to the problem, consider stress-reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises.
Conclusion
While the popping sound in your ear when lying down can be concerning, it is often related to benign conditions such as Eustachian tube dysfunction or muscle spasms. However, given the persistence of your symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice to rule out any underlying issues. An ENT specialist can provide a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment options to help alleviate your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
