Abnormal secretion?

In recent days, the discharge has been yellow-green and has an unpleasant odor, but there is no itching.
I usually use panty liners.
I had a fungal infection previously but completed the medication as directed by my doctor.
I have had sexual intercourse; could I be infected again, or is it due to poor physiological conditions?

SH, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/19

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

The response indicates that it may not be a fungal infection, but rather a bacterial infection, and the treatment medications differ.
Please discuss the possibility of a bacterial infection with your physician and undergo treatment.
It is recommended to minimize the use of panty liners once the treatment is effective and the discharge decreases.
Otherwise, prolonged moisture in the vagina can promote the faster growth of bacteria and fungi.
Sincerely, Dr.

Abnormal vaginal discharge can be a common concern for many women, and understanding its causes is crucial for maintaining reproductive health. The symptoms you've described—yellow-green discharge with an odor but without itching—can indicate several potential issues, particularly if you have a history of yeast infections.

One of the most common causes of yellow-green discharge is bacterial vaginosis (BV), which is a condition resulting from an imbalance of the normal bacteria found in the vagina. BV can lead to a fishy odor and changes in discharge, and it is not necessarily associated with itching. This condition is often triggered by sexual activity, douching, or the use of certain soaps or hygiene products that disrupt the natural flora of the vagina.

Another possibility is a sexually transmitted infection (STI), such as trichomoniasis, which can also cause yellow-green discharge and a foul smell. STIs can sometimes present with minimal or no other symptoms, making it important to consider your sexual history and any recent partners.

Given that you have previously experienced a yeast infection, it's important to note that while yeast infections typically cause thick, white, and odorless discharge, they can sometimes coexist with other infections or conditions. If you have recently engaged in sexual activity, it is possible that you may have been exposed to an infection, either from a partner or due to changes in your own vaginal flora.

Your mention of feeling unwell could also play a role in your current symptoms. Stress, hormonal changes, and overall health can impact your immune system and the balance of bacteria in your body, making you more susceptible to infections.

Here are some steps you can take to address your concerns:
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: It's essential to see a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis. They may perform a pelvic exam and take samples of the discharge for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause.

2. Avoid Self-Medication: While it may be tempting to use over-the-counter treatments or home remedies, these can sometimes worsen the situation or mask symptoms of a more serious condition.

3. Maintain Good Hygiene: Practice good vaginal hygiene by avoiding douching and using gentle, unscented soaps. Wearing breathable cotton underwear and avoiding tight-fitting clothing can also help maintain a healthy environment.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms you may experience, such as itching, burning during urination, or pelvic pain, as these can provide valuable information to your healthcare provider.

5. Discuss Sexual Health: If you are sexually active, consider discussing STI testing with your partner and ensure that both of you are aware of each other's sexual health status.

In conclusion, while yellow-green discharge with an odor can be concerning, it is often treatable once the underlying cause is identified. Prompt medical attention is key to ensuring that any potential infections are addressed and that your reproductive health is maintained.
