Mild sinusitis
Hello, doctor.
I am experiencing eye swelling and soreness, along with a tight sensation in my forehead and eyes, and occasional headaches while sleeping.
I went to the hospital for an examination and was diagnosed with mild sinusitis, hypertrophic rhinitis, and chronic sinus swelling.
The hospital prescribed me medication for allergic nasal congestion (without antibiotics), but I rarely have sneezing or runny nose.
Although I do have some yellow nasal discharge, it is not significant, yet I continue to experience discomfort in my head similar to sinusitis symptoms.
Is there a way for traditional Chinese medicine to provide symptomatic treatment for this condition?
JS, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/21
Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear JS,
Thank you for your message! The sensation of tightness in your forehead and the subtle headache during sleep can be treated with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
You just need to find a qualified TCM practitioner who can perform a comprehensive diagnosis through observation, listening, inquiry, and pulse examination to determine the appropriate treatment.
Wishing you all the best and good health!
Sincerely,
Yen Su-Mei,
Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital

More Info
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers various approaches to manage mild sinusitis, particularly for patients experiencing symptoms like eye pressure, headaches, and nasal congestion without significant nasal discharge. In TCM, sinusitis is often viewed through the lens of imbalances in the body's energy (Qi), blood, and the function of the organs, particularly the lungs and spleen.
TCM Diagnosis and Treatment Principles
1. Diagnosis: TCM practitioners will assess your condition through a comprehensive evaluation that includes your symptoms, tongue appearance, and pulse diagnosis. For your case, symptoms like eye pressure, headaches, and nasal congestion may indicate a pattern of "Wind-Heat" or "Phlegm-Dampness" obstructing the nasal passages.
2. Treatment Goals: The primary goals in TCM for treating mild sinusitis include:
- Dispersing Wind and Heat: This is particularly relevant if your symptoms are acute or if you have a sensation of heat or pressure.
- Resolving Phlegm: If there is a feeling of fullness or pressure in the sinuses, this may indicate phlegm accumulation.
- Strengthening the Spleen: A weak spleen can lead to dampness, which may contribute to sinus issues.
- Nourishing Yin: If there are signs of dryness or heat, nourishing the body's yin can help balance the condition.
Common TCM Approaches
1. Herbal Medicine: TCM often employs herbal formulas tailored to the individual's condition. Common herbs for sinusitis include:
- Xanthium (Cang Er Zi): Known for its ability to relieve nasal congestion and headaches.
- Magnolia Flower (Xin Yi Hua): Effective for opening the nasal passages and alleviating sinus pressure.
- Peppermint (Bo He): Used to disperse wind and relieve headaches.
- Ginger (Sheng Jiang): Helps warm the body and can aid in digestion, which is important for overall health.
2. Acupuncture: This technique can be beneficial in alleviating sinus pressure and headaches. Specific acupuncture points may be targeted to relieve nasal congestion, reduce inflammation, and promote overall Qi flow. Points commonly used include:
- Yintang (Extra Point): Located between the eyebrows, effective for headaches and sinus pressure.
- LI4 (Hegu): Located on the hand, helps relieve pain and congestion.
- ST36 (Zusanli): Strengthens the immune system and improves overall health.
3. Dietary Recommendations: TCM emphasizes the importance of diet in managing sinusitis. Foods that are warm and nourishing can help, such as:
- Warm soups and broths: These can help clear phlegm and nourish the body.
- Ginger and garlic: Both have warming properties and can help combat cold and dampness.
- Avoiding cold and raw foods: These can exacerbate dampness and phlegm accumulation.
4. Lifestyle Modifications: Stress management techniques, such as Tai Chi or Qi Gong, can help improve overall Qi flow and reduce symptoms. Additionally, ensuring adequate hydration and rest is crucial for recovery.
Conclusion
In summary, TCM offers a holistic approach to managing mild sinusitis, focusing on restoring balance within the body. If you are considering TCM for your sinusitis symptoms, it is advisable to consult a qualified TCM practitioner who can provide a personalized treatment plan based on your specific symptoms and overall health condition. This integrative approach may complement any conventional treatments you are currently receiving, potentially leading to improved outcomes and relief from your symptoms.
