Penile fungal infection issues..?
Hello Dr.
Hsu, thank you for your previous response.
I immediately took a leave to visit the municipal hospital.
After seeing the doctor, I was advised that it was due to excessive cleaning and to improve my cleaning methods (currently, I am not applying any ointment).
However, a few days later, I noticed that when standing to urinate, I could smell an odor emanating from my penis.
This smell seems to be present in the folds between the glans and the foreskin.
I am wondering if this kind of odor can occur in a healthy situation? (In the past, I habitually used cleaning products to wash my penis, so there was no odor.) Additionally, I would like to ask the doctor how to determine if it is a fungal infection.
Thank you, doctor!

Hello, fungal infections can cause unique epidermal lesions or symptoms.
There may be an odor, so it is advisable to enhance local hygiene: it is best to rinse with cool water after each urination.
Note: Over-cleaning (such as using too many harsh cleaning products or water that is too hot) can cause epidermal damage, which may lead to bacterial or fungal infections.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again for further discussion and research.

Understanding penile odor can be a concern for many individuals, and it is essential to differentiate between normal physiological occurrences and potential signs of infection, including fungal infections.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that the human body, including the genital area, has a natural microbiome. This microbiome consists of various bacteria and fungi that coexist and play a role in maintaining health. The presence of odor can be influenced by several factors, including hygiene practices, the presence of sweat, and the type of clothing worn.
In a healthy individual, some odor may be present, especially if there is a buildup of smegma, which is a combination of dead skin cells, oils, and moisture that can accumulate under the foreskin. This is particularly common in uncircumcised men. If proper hygiene is not maintained, this buildup can lead to an unpleasant smell. Therefore, it is crucial to clean the area gently but thoroughly, ensuring that you do not over-clean, as this can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and lead to irritation or infection.
Regarding your specific concern about whether the odor you are experiencing is a sign of a fungal infection, there are several indicators to consider. Fungal infections, such as candidiasis (commonly known as a yeast infection), often present with specific symptoms. These may include:
1. Itching or irritation: If you are experiencing persistent itching or discomfort in the genital area, this could be a sign of a fungal infection.
2. Unusual discharge: A thick, white discharge that resembles cottage cheese is often associated with a yeast infection.
3. Redness or swelling: Inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis) or the surrounding skin can indicate an infection.
4. Odor: While some odor can be normal, a strong, foul smell, especially when accompanied by the above symptoms, may suggest an infection.
If you are concerned about the odor and suspect it may be related to a fungal infection, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, take a sample for laboratory analysis to confirm the presence of a fungal infection.
In terms of hygiene practices, it is essential to strike a balance. Over-cleaning can lead to irritation and disrupt the natural flora, while inadequate cleaning can lead to odor and potential infections. Here are some tips for maintaining genital hygiene:
- Gentle cleaning: Use warm water and mild, unscented soap to clean the area. Avoid harsh soaps or antiseptics that can irritate the skin.
- Dry thoroughly: After washing, ensure the area is dried properly, as moisture can promote fungal growth.
- Wear breathable fabrics: Opt for cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing to allow airflow and reduce moisture buildup.
- Avoid irritants: Be cautious with scented products, lotions, or powders in the genital area, as these can cause irritation.
In summary, while some odor can be normal, especially if you have recently changed your hygiene routine, persistent or foul-smelling odor accompanied by other symptoms may warrant further investigation for a possible fungal infection. Consulting with a healthcare provider will provide clarity and appropriate treatment options if needed.
