Penile odor
I originally had an occasional foul smell from smegma on my penis.
However, before having sexual intercourse with my girlfriend, I sometimes noticed a strange odor (similar to a fishy smell) from her vagina.
After engaging in sexual intercourse, my penis frequently has an unusual odor (even after a period of not having sex, there is still a smell), and it is similar to the odor from my girlfriend's vagina.
I do not have any discomfort in my penis.
Could there be an underlying issue causing this?

Understanding unpleasant odors in the genital area, particularly in relation to the penis and vagina, can be a source of concern for many individuals. The presence of unusual odors, such as a fishy smell, can be indicative of various underlying issues, and it is essential to understand the potential causes and solutions.
In your case, the odor you describe as "腥味" (fishy smell) associated with both your penis and your girlfriend's vagina could be attributed to several factors. One common cause of such odors is the accumulation of smegma, which is a combination of dead skin cells, oils, and moisture that can build up under the foreskin in uncircumcised men. This accumulation can lead to a foul smell if not cleaned regularly. It is important to maintain proper hygiene by gently retracting the foreskin and washing the area with mild soap and water.
Another potential cause of the odor could be a bacterial or yeast infection. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition in women that can cause a fishy odor, particularly after sexual intercourse. It occurs when there is an imbalance in the normal bacterial flora of the vagina. If your girlfriend has BV, it could explain the odor you both experience. It is advisable for her to consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment, which may include antibiotics.
In men, a similar imbalance can occur, leading to conditions such as balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis) often caused by poor hygiene, infections, or irritants. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and odor. If you notice any changes in your skin, such as irritation or discharge, it is important to seek medical advice.
Additionally, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as trichomoniasis can also cause unusual odors in both men and women. Trichomoniasis is a parasitic infection that can lead to a foul-smelling discharge and irritation. If you or your girlfriend have had unprotected sexual encounters with other partners, it is crucial to get tested for STIs.
While you mentioned that you do not experience any discomfort, the presence of an odor can still indicate an underlying issue that may require attention. It is essential to communicate openly with your partner about these concerns and consider seeking medical advice together. A healthcare provider can perform necessary examinations, including swabs or cultures, to identify any infections or imbalances.
In summary, unpleasant odors in the genital area can arise from various causes, including poor hygiene, infections, or STIs. Maintaining good hygiene practices, such as regular washing and ensuring both partners are healthy, is crucial. If the odor persists despite good hygiene, or if either partner experiences additional symptoms, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and treatment. Open communication with your partner about these issues can also help alleviate concerns and promote a healthy sexual relationship.
