Can high myopia achieve a visual acuity of 1.0 after correction with glasses?
Hello, Doctor: I have been nearsighted since the third grade, with my prescription increasing by about 100 degrees each year.
After college, my prescription stabilized, and I have only been able to get glasses that correct my vision to 0.8 in both eyes (the optical shop said that correcting to 1.0 would cause dizziness).
Currently, I have approximately 900 degrees of myopia and 100 degrees of astigmatism in both eyes.
Since I am applying for a firefighter position that has vision standards, I would like to ask the following questions: 1.
With my current prescription, can I achieve a vision of 1.0 (or higher) with corrective lenses, assuming there are no other eye diseases present? 2.
When getting glasses, should I aim for a correction to 0.8 or to normal vision of 1.0 for better results? Thank you, Doctor, for taking the time to answer!

Dr. Wang Zhishun reply Ophthalmology
Hello: The best corrected vision can reach various levels, influenced by many non-disease factors such as the density of retinal photoreceptor cells and ocular aberrations, among others.
There is no fixed standard.
Generally, a range of 0.8 to 1.0 is considered common for most individuals.
As for the prescription for glasses, it also depends on factors such as age, degree of refractive error, and personal needs, so there is no definitive standard.
Based on your age and your intention to apply for the fire department, you might consider aiming for a vision of 1.0.

High myopia, defined as a refractive error greater than -6.00 diopters, can significantly impact vision and overall eye health. Individuals with high myopia often experience various visual disturbances, including blurred vision, distortion, and an increased risk of retinal complications. However, with appropriate corrective measures, such as glasses or contact lenses, many individuals can achieve satisfactory visual acuity.
To address your specific questions:
1. Achieving 1.0 Vision with Glasses: Given your current prescription of approximately -9.00 diopters (900 degrees) of myopia and -1.00 diopter (100 degrees) of astigmatism, it is possible to achieve 1.0 vision (20/20) with corrective lenses, provided that your eyes are otherwise healthy. The effectiveness of glasses in correcting vision depends on several factors, including the accuracy of the prescription, the quality of the lenses, and the individual's visual needs. If your glasses are properly prescribed and fitted, you should be able to achieve optimal vision correction. However, if you experience discomfort or visual disturbances, such as dizziness when attempting to achieve 1.0 vision, it may indicate that the prescription is too strong or that there are other underlying issues that need to be addressed.
2. Choosing the Right Prescription: When it comes to selecting a prescription, the goal is to achieve the best possible vision without causing discomfort. If your glasses can correct your vision to 0.8 (20/25), it may be a more comfortable option than pushing for 1.0 (20/20) if it causes visual disturbances. It is essential to communicate with your eye care professional about your specific needs, especially since you are preparing for a vision standard for firefighting. They can help determine the most suitable prescription that balances clarity and comfort.
In addition to these points, it is crucial to consider the long-term implications of high myopia. Regular eye examinations are essential to monitor for potential complications associated with high myopia, such as retinal detachment, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. These conditions can develop over time and may not present symptoms until significant damage has occurred. Therefore, maintaining a proactive approach to eye health is vital.
Furthermore, lifestyle factors can also play a role in managing high myopia. Engaging in outdoor activities, reducing screen time, and practicing the 20-20-20 rule (taking a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes) can help alleviate eye strain and potentially slow the progression of myopia.
In conclusion, while achieving 1.0 vision with glasses is possible for individuals with high myopia, it is essential to prioritize comfort and overall eye health. Regular check-ups with an eye care professional will ensure that any changes in vision or eye health are promptly addressed. If you have any further concerns or questions, do not hesitate to reach out to your eye care provider for personalized advice and recommendations.
