Sore throat

Even though I don't have a cold, my throat occasionally starts to feel sharp pain that gradually increases.
Swallowing saliva also causes a slight sting, and sometimes it gets so intense that it makes me want to gag, and it can also trigger a cough.
What could be the reason for this?

A Pi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/27

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: The most common cause is chronic irritation, which may be related to post-nasal drip, acid reflux, smoking, or air pollution, among other factors.
It is recommended to drink plenty of water.
If the pain persists and does not improve, a medical examination is necessary.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

Sudden throat pain can be quite alarming, especially when it occurs without any accompanying symptoms of a cold or flu. There are several potential causes for this type of discomfort, and understanding them can help in finding appropriate remedies.

One common cause of sudden throat pain is acute pharyngitis, which is an inflammation of the pharynx. This can occur due to viral infections, even if you do not exhibit typical cold symptoms. Viruses can cause irritation and inflammation in the throat, leading to the sharp, stabbing pain you describe. Another possibility is allergies; allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander can cause throat irritation and discomfort.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is another potential culprit. In this condition, stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, which can lead to a burning sensation in the throat and cause pain, especially when swallowing. This might explain the sensation of wanting to cough or gag, as the throat becomes irritated by the acid.

Tonsillitis or tonsil stones can also lead to sudden throat pain. Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, often due to infection, and can cause significant discomfort. Tonsil stones, which are calcifications that form in the crevices of the tonsils, can also cause sharp pain and discomfort when they irritate the throat.

Another possibility is muscle strain in the throat area, which can occur from excessive coughing, shouting, or even prolonged talking. This strain can lead to localized pain that may feel sharp or stabbing.

In terms of remedies, here are some suggestions:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help soothe the throat and keep it moist. Warm liquids, such as herbal teas or broths, can be particularly soothing.

2. Gargle Salt Water: A mixture of warm water and salt can help reduce inflammation and provide temporary relief from pain.

3. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.

4. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your home can help keep the air moist, which can soothe a dry or irritated throat.

5. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate throat pain.

6. Rest Your Voice: If your throat pain is related to strain, giving your voice a break can help reduce discomfort.

If your throat pain persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as fever, difficulty swallowing, or breathing difficulties, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In conclusion, while sudden throat pain can stem from various causes, understanding these potential triggers and implementing some home remedies can often provide relief. However, do not hesitate to seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve or if you have concerns about your health.
