Is it normal to see halos or rainbow effects around streetlights?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask if seeing halos around streetlights at night with rainbow colors is normal? I also experience slight pain and discomfort in my eyes.
Is this due to fatigue or should I get it checked? Thank you for your time!

More Info
Seeing rainbow halos around streetlights at night can be a perplexing experience, and it's understandable to be concerned about what this phenomenon might indicate regarding your eye health. While it can be alarming, there are several factors that can contribute to this visual effect, and it is not always indicative of a serious eye condition.
Firstly, the appearance of rainbow halos is often related to the way light interacts with moisture in the air, particularly during rainy conditions. When light from streetlights passes through water droplets in the atmosphere, it can refract and disperse, creating a spectrum of colors similar to a rainbow. This is a normal optical phenomenon and is not necessarily a sign of any underlying eye problem. In fact, this effect is more pronounced in certain weather conditions, such as rain or fog, when the air is filled with tiny water droplets.
However, if you are experiencing discomfort in your eyes, such as a mild ache or a sensation of fatigue, it is essential to consider other factors that may be contributing to these symptoms. Eye strain can occur from prolonged exposure to screens, inadequate lighting, or even from focusing on distant objects for extended periods. If your eyes feel tired or strained, it may simply be a result of fatigue rather than a serious issue.
That said, there are certain eye conditions that can also cause visual disturbances, including halos around lights. For instance, conditions like corneal edema (swelling of the cornea), cataracts, or elevated intraocular pressure (which can be associated with glaucoma) can lead to similar symptoms. If your vision changes persist, or if you notice other symptoms such as blurred vision, significant pain, or changes in your field of vision, it would be prudent to seek a comprehensive eye examination from an eye care professional.
In summary, while seeing rainbow halos around streetlights can be a normal optical phenomenon, especially in specific weather conditions, it is essential to pay attention to any accompanying symptoms you may be experiencing. If your eye discomfort continues or worsens, or if you have concerns about your vision, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with an eye doctor for a thorough evaluation. Early detection and treatment of any potential eye issues can help maintain your eye health and overall well-being.
