Is it pregnancy or premenstrual symptoms?

Hello Doctor, my period is 7 days late.
I have frequent urination (the urine is very light, almost clear), my lower body feels sore, I have a constant urge to have a bowel movement, and I have a mild fever (38.1°C).
I feel nauseous at night after staying up late, but not in the morning.
Two days before my expected period, I had unprotected intercourse with my boyfriend.
I took a pregnancy test today, and it showed one line, but I'm still a bit worried.
Could this be a sign of pregnancy or just premenstrual symptoms? Is my late period due to stress from staying up late?

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/22

It's possible; it's better to see a doctor for a thorough examination.

When it comes to understanding whether your symptoms are indicative of pregnancy or premenstrual syndrome (PMS), it's essential to consider various factors, including your menstrual cycle, recent sexual activity, and the symptoms you're experiencing.
From your description, you mentioned that your period is delayed by seven days, and you are experiencing symptoms such as frequent urination, lower body discomfort, a mild fever (38.1°C), and nausea, particularly after staying up late. You also noted that you had unprotected intercourse with your boyfriend two days before your expected period, which adds a layer of complexity to your situation.

First, let's address the possibility of pregnancy. The fact that you had unprotected intercourse during your fertile window (which typically occurs around ovulation) raises the likelihood of conception. A home pregnancy test showing one line typically indicates a negative result, meaning that it is unlikely you are pregnant. However, it's important to note that home pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. Since your period is only seven days late, it might be beneficial to retest in a few days or consult a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can detect pregnancy earlier than a urine test.

Now, regarding your symptoms, they can be attributed to several factors. PMS can cause a range of symptoms, including mood swings, fatigue, breast tenderness, and physical discomfort. The symptoms you described, such as lower body soreness and nausea, can also be associated with PMS. Additionally, stress, lack of sleep, and changes in your routine can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. Stress and fatigue can lead to hormonal imbalances, which may delay your period.

The mild fever you mentioned is less common in PMS and could indicate an underlying issue, such as an infection or another health concern. If the fever persists or worsens, it would be wise to seek medical attention to rule out any potential infections or other health issues.

In summary, while your symptoms could be indicative of either pregnancy or PMS, the negative pregnancy test suggests that pregnancy is less likely. However, the combination of stress, lack of sleep, and hormonal fluctuations could very well explain the delay in your period. It is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely and consider retesting for pregnancy in a few days or consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can provide a more comprehensive assessment and help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms, ensuring you receive the appropriate care and guidance.

Xiao Fang, you are a 21-year-old female. If your menstrual cycle is usually quite regular and this time it has been delayed for several days, and if pregnancy cannot be ruled out, you should take a pregnancy test (urine test) immediately to confirm whether you are pregnant.
