Post-Medication Abortion Discharge: Red and Brown Symptoms - Obstetrics and Gynecology

After a medical abortion, the discharge may appear red or brownish in color?

Hello, I previously inquired about the persistent reddish-brown discharge after a medical abortion.
On November 13, during my follow-up appointment, it was confirmed that the embryo had been expelled.
I also discussed the discharge issue with my doctor, who prescribed a suppository for me that day.
It was suggested that the prolonged use of pads might have led to an infection.
I used one suppository (one before bed), and the next morning I started bleeding, similar to a menstrual period.
On November 16, I visited the clinic again, and the doctor mentioned that the bleeding might be due to the abortion and prescribed medication to regulate my menstrual cycle along with a hemostatic injection.
I also asked her about the reddish-brown discharge, and she explained that it was likely due to some menstrual blood that had not yet been expelled, and that it would resolve once everything was cleared.
However, since November 17, I have not experienced any bleeding until today (November 25), and it has been over a week, but I still have discharge, which is mostly brown or reddish.
Most of the time, it is just a little, but sometimes it can be quite a bit.
I have been taking the menstrual regulation medication prescribed on November 16 for a total of 11 days.
I would like to know if I should schedule another follow-up appointment, or should I wait until I finish the medication and my menstrual cycle is complete before returning?

More Info

After a medication abortion, it is common for individuals to experience various types of discharge, including red and brown symptoms. The presence of these colors in the discharge can be attributed to several factors related to the body's natural healing process and the expulsion of pregnancy tissue.

Understanding the Discharge
1. Red Discharge: This typically indicates fresh blood, which can occur as the uterus contracts and expels any remaining tissue. It is similar to a menstrual period and can vary in intensity. If the bleeding is heavy or accompanied by severe pain, it is essential to seek medical attention.

2. Brown Discharge: Brown discharge is often older blood that has taken longer to exit the body. It is common to see brown discharge after an abortion as the body clears out the uterine lining and any residual tissue. This can last for several days to weeks, depending on individual circumstances.

Post-Medication Abortion Care
Given that you have already consulted with your doctor and received medication to help regulate your menstrual cycle, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Here are some considerations:
- Duration of Discharge: It is not unusual for brown or red discharge to persist for a few weeks after a medication abortion. However, if this continues beyond a few weeks or if you experience heavy bleeding, it is advisable to return to your healthcare provider.

- Signs of Infection: If you notice any signs of infection, such as a foul odor, fever, or increased pain, you should seek medical attention immediately. The use of a suppository may have contributed to irritation or infection if pads were not changed regularly.

- Follow-Up Appointments: Since your doctor has prescribed medication to help regulate your cycle, it may be beneficial to wait until you complete this course before scheduling another appointment. However, if you have concerns or if the discharge changes significantly (e.g., becomes heavier or is accompanied by pain), do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider sooner.

When to Seek Medical Attention
- If you experience heavy bleeding (soaking through a pad in an hour or less for two consecutive hours).

- If you have severe abdominal pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications.

- If you develop a fever (temperature above 100.4°F or 38°C).

- If the discharge has a foul odor or is accompanied by unusual symptoms.

Conclusion
In summary, it is common to experience red and brown discharge after a medication abortion as your body expels remaining tissue and returns to its normal state. While it is generally safe to wait until you finish your medication before returning for a follow-up, you should remain vigilant for any concerning symptoms. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and care. Your health and well-being are paramount, and your doctor can provide the best guidance based on your specific situation.

Please return for a follow-up appointment within 2 days to check if the gestational sac has been expelled. RU486 is known to have emetic effects, so we need to determine if the procedure was successful or if further monitoring is required.
