Floaters issue?

Recently, when I wake up and open my eyes, I see transparent grid-like patterns that gradually disappear after a while.
Could this be a sign of grid-like changes? I do not have high myopia, but I do have floaters and astigmatism.

Dr. Wang Zhishun reply Ophthalmology

Hello, the grid-like lesions refer to the condition observed by the physician on the retina, rather than describing the patient's visual perception.

Floaters, including the grid patterns you describe, can be a common visual phenomenon, especially as people age. These floaters are typically caused by changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye, which can become more liquid and allow tiny fibers to clump together, casting shadows on the retina. This is often a benign condition, but it can sometimes indicate underlying issues that require medical attention.

The appearance of grid-like patterns or other unusual visual disturbances, especially if they are new or accompanied by other symptoms such as flashes of light or a sudden increase in floaters, should be evaluated by an eye care professional. While you mentioned that you do not have high myopia, which is a risk factor for retinal issues, it is still important to monitor any changes in your vision.

In your case, the presence of floaters and the grid patterns you see upon waking could be related to the normal aging process of the eye or could be associated with your existing condition of astigmatism. Astigmatism can cause visual distortions, but it typically does not lead to the specific grid patterns you are experiencing.
It is also worth noting that while floaters are usually harmless, they can sometimes be a sign of more serious conditions such as retinal tears or detachments, particularly if they are accompanied by flashes of light or a shadow in your peripheral vision. Therefore, it is crucial to have a comprehensive eye examination if you notice any significant changes in your vision.

In summary, while the grid patterns you are seeing may not be a direct cause for concern, it is essential to consult with an eye care professional to rule out any potential issues, especially since you have a history of floaters and astigmatism. Regular eye check-ups can help ensure that your eye health is monitored and any necessary interventions can be made promptly.
