Pressing on the abdomen causes pain?
Hello doctor, I often suffer from stomach pain.
I tend to get anxious, and recently I've noticed that when I press on my stomach, I feel pain (especially in the upper left area), even though I don't have any stomach pain at that moment.
Could you please explain why this is happening?

Hello: If there is no pain without pressure, try to avoid applying pressure.
It is possible that the force of the pressure is causing greater irritation to the stomach, which may trigger pain.
Additionally, the area you are pressing may already have gas or inflammation.
If the problem persists, it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist.

Understanding abdominal pain, especially when it comes to pressing on the stomach, can be quite complex. The sensation of pain when you apply pressure to your abdomen can arise from various factors, including muscular, neurological, or visceral (internal organ) issues. In your case, since you mentioned that you often suffer from stomach pain and experience tenderness upon pressing, particularly in the left upper quadrant, it’s essential to consider several possibilities.
Firstly, the pain you feel when pressing on your abdomen could be related to the muscles in the abdominal wall. If you've recently changed your exercise routine, such as transitioning from sit-ups to running, your abdominal muscles might be experiencing strain or tension. This can lead to localized tenderness, especially if the muscles are overworked or if there has been any minor injury. Muscle pain is typically more superficial and can be reproduced by palpation (pressing) of the area.
On the other hand, if the pain is more profound or associated with specific internal organs, it could indicate a visceral issue. The left upper quadrant of the abdomen houses several important organs, including the stomach, spleen, and parts of the pancreas and colon. Conditions affecting these organs can sometimes present as tenderness when pressure is applied. For instance, gastritis or peptic ulcers can cause discomfort in the stomach area, which may be exacerbated by pressure. Additionally, splenic issues, such as splenomegaly (enlargement of the spleen), can also cause pain in this region.
Another consideration is the possibility of referred pain. Sometimes, pain originating from one area of the body can be felt in another. For example, issues with the diaphragm or even the heart can sometimes manifest as abdominal pain, particularly in the upper regions.
Given your history of stomach pain and the recent changes in your physical activity, it’s crucial to monitor any accompanying symptoms. If you experience additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, changes in bowel habits, or significant changes in the nature of your pain, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend diagnostic tests, such as an ultrasound or endoscopy, to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
In terms of self-care, if the pain is indeed muscular, gentle stretching, heat application, and rest may help alleviate discomfort. However, if you suspect an internal issue, it’s best to avoid self-diagnosing and seek medical advice.
In summary, the pain you experience when pressing on your stomach could be due to muscular strain or an underlying visceral issue. Given your history of stomach pain and anxiety, it’s essential to approach this matter with caution and seek professional guidance if the pain persists or worsens. Understanding the underlying cause of your abdominal pain is key to effective management and treatment.
