Pressing on the abdomen causes pain?
I have pain when pressing on my abdomen (about 2-3 centimeters above the navel on the right side).
It feels like there is something there, but it also feels like there isn't.
Could this be a lipoma, gallstones, or another condition? Thank you!

Dr. He Zhenming reply Surgery
Hello: Based on your symptoms, it doesn't seem like gallstones.
Please visit the outpatient clinic for an ultrasound examination, which should help determine if there is anything abnormal.
Wishing you good health.

Abdominal pain, especially when pressing on specific areas, can be a complex issue that may arise from various causes. Given your description of pain located about 2-3 centimeters above the navel on the right side, there are several potential explanations to consider.
Firstly, it is important to differentiate between superficial and deeper sources of pain. Since you mentioned that the pain occurs specifically when pressing on the area, it could indicate a musculoskeletal issue, such as muscle strain or inflammation. This is particularly plausible if you have recently engaged in physical activities like sit-ups or running, which can lead to muscle soreness or strain in the abdominal region.
However, if the pain is persistent and localized, it could also suggest an underlying issue related to the internal organs. The right upper quadrant of the abdomen houses several important structures, including the liver, gallbladder, and parts of the intestines. Conditions such as gallstones (cholelithiasis) or inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis) could cause pain in this area, especially if the pain is accompanied by other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or changes in appetite.
Another possibility is the presence of a hernia, which occurs when an internal organ or tissue bulges through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. This can lead to localized pain, especially when pressure is applied. Fatty tumors, known as lipomas, can also develop in the abdominal wall and may cause discomfort when pressed, although they are typically benign and not associated with serious health concerns.
In addition to these possibilities, it is essential to consider gastrointestinal issues. Conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, or even irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can manifest as abdominal pain, although they are usually accompanied by other gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, changes in bowel habits, or heartburn.
Given the range of potential causes, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as fever, significant changes in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, imaging studies (such as an ultrasound or CT scan), and laboratory tests to determine the underlying cause of your abdominal pain.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to muscle strain or a benign condition, the possibility of more serious underlying issues cannot be ruled out without further investigation. It is always better to err on the side of caution and consult with a healthcare provider to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
